Kristian Gullichsen, Erkki Kairamo and Timo Vormala have created over the years a partnership grounded on individual differences and on a fundamental agreement on what should be and can be, today, the mission of architecture. Each one of their executions is the description of a small adventure, as well as a familiar place, steeped in recollections and expectations. Whether it be an industrial plant, a town centre or a public housing district, located in a city centre, a suburban district or along the seashore, each design proves that to express an idea what is needed is not rhetorics but clarity. The book ranges from the first less-known buildings of the seventies, still bound to the prefabrication theme, up to the latest projects for entire city districts having a strong urban drive, transiting through the production of the eighties, in which the classic themes of modern architecture, from Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto to Soviet constructivism, are revisited. Sebastiano Brandolini graduated at the Architectural Association in London in 1982, and at the Milan Polytechnic in 1986. From 1983 to 1996 he was editor of the Italian magazine "Casabella." He is currently architectural correspondent of "D - La Repubblica," the only Italian popular magazine featuring architecture on a regular basis. He acts as juror of the trans-national "Alpine Architecture" competition. He writes for many specialized journals and is particularly interested in the relationship between architecture and engineering. Over the years he taught at the Milan Polytechnic, at the IUAV in Venice, and at the London School of Economics. Since 1994 he has been running his own architectural design practice(with Monica Valdameri). Among his latest projects: the redesign of a number of Hertz position in the Milan area and a major Leisure Centre in the Milan edge-city.

"In 1993 the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church promulgated what became known as the Balamand Document, 'Uniatism, Method of Union of the Past and the Present Search for Full Communion'. While the first agreed statements of that ecumenical dialogue aroused great enthusiasm and hope for Catholic-Orthodox unity, the Balamand documented interjected a period of instability in Catholic-Orthodox relations that has persisted to this day. These sixteen essays by Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic and independent scholars bring together studies on the quarter century since the Balamand document was first proclaimed. The first section of this book presents the historical and theological context of modern Orthodox-Catholic ecumenical dialogue. What is often at stake in movements of reconciliation are the healing of painful memories of the past. The second part of the book examines the reception and, in some cases, non-reception of the Balamand Document in Central and Eastern Europe, while the third section engages the reception of the Balamand Document in the Middle East, with chapters on the Oriental Orthodox Churches and the Assyrian Church of the East. The various authors reveal the great diversity that exists in the spiritual, theological, historical and liturgical traditions of the Eastern Catholic Churches, especially in their relations with the Orthodox Churches. This book looks at all aspects of Dresser's career including wallpaper design, a wide variety of metalwork (most notably tableware and teapots), textile design, pottery, and glassware. His fascination with Japanese art and design gave his metalwork in particular a clean, minimalist look that seems to anticipate much of modern design from Bauhaus to Michael Graves. Well known and respected in his lifetime, his reputation suffered in the years after his death, and it is only in the last few decades that interest in his work has been revived. As a result, his pieces can be found in the collections of art museums nationwide and continue to sell well at auction. A long overdue look at one of design's most influential figures, this book will be a welcome addition to any design lover's library.

A broad monograph devoted to one of the preeminent names in contemporary Japanese photography. Moriyama's photography is provocative, both for the form it takes (Moriyama's photographs may be dirty, blurry, overexposed or scratched) and for its content. The viewer's experience of the photo--whether it captures a place, a person, a situation or an atmosphere--is the central thrust in his work, which vividly and directly conveys the artist's emotions. The approximately 200 black-and-white images sketch out an original perspective on Japanese society, especially during the period from the 1950s to the '70s. During this time, he produced a collection of photographs -- Nippon gekijo shashincho -- which showed darker sides of urban life and relatively unknown parts of cities. In them, he attempted to show what was being left behind during the technological advances and increased industrialization in much of Japanese society. His work was often stark and contrasting within itself--one image could convey an array of senses; all without using color. His work was jarring, yet symbiotic to his own fervent lifestyle. In addition, the artist has included a number of photos shot in the past decade to complete this volume.
