Modeling Complex Linguistic Information to Support Group Decision Making Under Uncertainty : Theories, Methods and Applications Zhen Zhang, Wenyu Yu, Zhuolin Li Springer Singapore, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2024
This book systematically explores theories related to linguistic computational models and group decision making methods under uncertainty. It introduces innovative linguistic computational models capable of fusing complex linguistic information, including multi-granular linguistic information, unbalanced linguistic information and hesitant fuzzy linguistic information. Building upon the linguistic computational models, this book presents methods tailored to various types of group decision making problems under uncertainty. Additionally, it delves into group decision making problems where the personalized individual semantics of experts are considered. The book also showcases practical applications of the proposed group decision making methods, ranging from ERP system supplier selection to talent recruitment, subway line selection, and location selection for electric vehicle charging stations. By shedding light on novel models for modeling complex linguistic information and introducing new approaches to addressing linguistic group decision making challenges, this book offers valuable insights for engineers, researchers, and postgraduates interested in decision analysis, operations research, computational intelligence, management science and engineering, and related fields.

Handbook of Critical Whiteness : Deconstructing Dominant Discourses Across Disciplines Jioji Ravulo (editor), Katarzyna Olcoń (editor), Tinashe Dune (editor), Alex Workman (editor), Pranee Liamputtong (editor) Springer Singapore, 1, 2024
This timely handbook responds to the international drive to know more about Whiteness – its origins, its impacts and, importantly, the means for diffusing it. Guided by critical Whiteness theory, the volume deconstructs, decodes and disrupts Whiteness as it is constructed and employed in contemporary and diverse contexts. To do so, the international contributors discuss and critique the role of 21st-century Whiteness across a range of professions and disciplines relevant to the needs of contemporary global citizens. Failure to deconstruct Whiteness as an ideology and the power structure underlying national and global racial inequalities undermines the efforts to improve social, health and economic outcomes for societies and nations on a grand scale.

Generalized Dynamics of Soft-Matter Quasicrystals : Mathematical Models, Solutions and Applications Tian-You Fan & Wenge Yang & Hui Cheng & Xiao-Hong Sun Springer Singapore; Springer Nature, Springer Series in Materials Science 260, 2, 2022
This book highlights the mathematical models and solutions of the generalized dynamics of soft-matter quasicrystals (SMQ) and introduces possible applications of the theory and methods. Based on the theory of quasiperiodic symmetry and symmetry breaking, the book treats the dynamics of individual quasicrystal systems by reducing them to nonlinear partial differential equations and then provides methods for solving the initial-boundary value problems in these equations. The solutions obtained demonstrate the distribution, deformation and motion of SMQ and determine the stress, velocity and displacement fields. The interactions between phonons, phasons and fluid phonons are discussed in some fundamental materials samples. The reader benefits from a detailed comparison of the mathematical solutions for both solid and soft-matter quasicrystals, gaining a deeper understanding of the universal properties of SMQ.  The second edition covers the latest research progress on quasicrystals in topics such as thermodynamic stability, three-dimensional problems and solutions, rupture theory, and the photonic band-gap and its applications. These novel chapters make the book an even more useful and comprehensive reference guide for researchers in condensed matter physics, chemistry and materials sciences.

Toleration : Group Governance in a Chinese Third Line Enterprise Chao Chen, (Writer on industrial management) Springer Singapore, Singapore, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2018
This book uncovers the mysterious social and political structures of China's "Third Front," the large state-sponsored development of inland China during the late Maoist period. This movement gave birth to a few important industrial bases such as Panzhihua and Liupanshui and had significant impact on megacities such as Lanzhou, Wuhan, and Chongqing. Yet, this is scarcely known to the West and even the younger generation of Chinese. Chen explores the ways that new industrial structures and hierarchies were created and operated, using political and sociological methodologies to understand what is distinctive in the history of the Chinese corporation. This book will be of immense interest to political scientists, sociologists, China scholars, and researchers of alternative economic structures. Chao Chen, with a PhD from the National University of Singapore, is a rising scholar based at Xiamen University's Institute of Taiwan Research. Specializing in state and society relations, comparative political economy, and qualitative methods, Chen is a name to watch

Decentralization and Development of Sri Lanka Within a Unitary State Nawalage Seneviratne Cooray; Sirimal Abeyratne; Springer Malaysia Representative Office Springer Singapore : Imprint : Springer, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2017
1 online resource (xi, 364 pages) : This comprehensive volume provides uniquely diverse insights into various aspects of decentralization and development from both developed and developing countries, with special reference to Sri Lanka. For a quarter century, Sri Lanka was battered by its prolonged civil war, which ended in 2009, but has now achieved relative peace and stability. Having developed rapidly, Sri Lanka offers a classic example for developing countries. There is, however, a strong need, particularly in the context of postwar conflict, to formulate policies for reconciliation, peace building, and development at all levels--local, provincial, and national. Decentralization itself is not a new subject; however, how to devolve power to local administrative levels within a unitary system and how to link the devolved power to make local administrative systems more conducive to development and provide better services for citizens are challenging tasks in many countries. Taking into account the developmental, governance, and conciliatory needs and the sensitivity of central-local relations, this volume critically examines the local government systems in Sri Lanka. It also proposes a viable, effective and autonomous local-level administrative unit based, which draws on experiences from Japan and other countries, and identifies the role and functions of such a unit. The book presents commissioned papers from a three-year research project undertaken by internationally respected experts with financial support by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) under a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research 1. Chapter 1: Introduction -- Part one -- Chapter 2: Local Government System in Sri Lanka: A Historical Overview -- Chapter 3: Developmental Role and Financing of Sub-National Units of Government: The Case of Provincial Councils in Sri Lanka -- Chapter 4: Intergovernmental Fiscal Framework for Local Government and Centre-Local Revenue and Expenditure Sharing: A Comparative Analysis -- Chapter 5: Towards an Appropriate Public Local Government Unit for Sri Lanka -- Part two -- Chapter 6: Agriculture and Rural Development under Central Government and Provincial Council Setup in Sri Lanka -- Chapter 7: Sustainable Resource Mobilization for Community Development in Sri Lanka: LEAD Participatory Poverty Reduction Experience -- Chapter 8: Public Investment in Education: Benefits, Challenges and Opportunities -- Chapter 8: Public Investment in Education: Benefits, Challenges and Opportunities -- Chapter 10: Post Conflict Foreign Policy Challenges for Sri Lanka -- Part three -- Chapter 11: Role of Local Institutions in the Development of Industrial Clusters -- Chapter 12: Decentralization of Natural Resources Management in ASEAN -- Chapter 13: Fiscal Decentralisation and Economic Growth: Evidence from Vietnam -- Chapter 14: Education Expenditure and Economic Growth under Decentralization: An Empirical Study of Sri Lanka and Canada -- Chapter 15: Japanese Local Tax System and Decentralization Includes bibliographical references

Confucianism and the Chinese Self : Re-examining Max Weber’s China Jack Barbalet Springer Singapore, Singapore, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2017
"Setting the context for the upheavals and transformations of contemporary China, this text provides a re-assessment of Max Weber's celebrated sociology of China. Returning to the sources drawn on by Weber in The Religion of China: Confucianism and Taoism, it offers an informed account of the Chinese institutions discussed and a concise discussion of Weber's writings on 'the rise of modern capitalism'. Notably it subjects Weber's argument to critical scrutiny, arguing that he drew upon sources which infused the central European imagination of the time, constructing a sense of China in Europe, whilst European writers were constructing a particular image of imperial China and its Confucian framework. Re-examining Weber's discussion of the role of the individual in Confucian thought and the subordination, in China, of the interests of the individual to those of the political community and the ancestral clan, this book offers a cutting edge contribution to the continuing debate on Weber's RoC in East Asia today, against the background of the rise of modern capitalism in the "little dragons" of Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea, and the "big dragons" of Japan and the People's Republic of China."--Page 4 of cover

nexusstc/Linear algebra/9028a88049a9ee0cafe3fa4a5f333b25.pdf
Handbook for automatic computation / Volume II, Linear algebra / J. H. Wilkinson, C. Reinsch ; chief editor F. L. Bauer M. Thamban Nair, Arindama Singh Springer Singapore Springer Nature, Springer Nature (Textbooks & Major Reference Works), Singapore, 2018
This book introduces the fundamental concepts, techniques and results of linear algebra that form the basis of analysis, applied mathematics and algebra. Intended as a text for undergraduate students of mathematics, science and engineering with a knowledge of set theory, it discusses the concepts that are constantly used by scientists and engineers. It also lays the foundation for the language and framework for modern analysis and its applications. Divided into seven chapters, it discusses vector spaces, linear transformations, best approximation in inner product spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, block diagonalisation, triangularisation, Jordan form, singular value decomposition, polar decomposition, and many more topics that are relevant to applications. The topics chosen have become well-established over the years and are still very much in use. The approach is both geometric and algebraic. It avoids distraction from the main theme by deferring the exercises to the end of each section. These exercises aim at reinforcing the learned concepts rather than as exposing readers to the tricks involved in the computation. Problems included at the end of each chapter are relatively advanced and require a deep understanding and assimilation of the topics.-- Provided by publisher

Employees' Emotional Intelligence, Motivation and Productivity, and Organizational Excellence : A Future Trend in HRD Gagari Chakrabarti; Tapas Chatterjea; Springer Malaysia Representative Office Palgrave Macmillan Springer [Distributor, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2017
Annotation This book focuses on emotional intelligence, which has emerged as a factor in superior on-the-job performance and ability to lead an effective life. Based on an emerging country, namely India, the book deviates from traditional approaches by focusing on non-cognitive rather than cognitive skills to explain and predict performance and achievements. It finds that those with strong intrinsic non-cognitive skills, like trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability, initiative and commitment have a better chance of becoming effective leaders with enhanced service-orientation, empathy and conflict management skills -traits desired by any organization striving for efficiency. It also demonstrates that while such imponderable, intrinsic skills matter, they cannot replace discernible psycho-social factors and hence, effective hiring strategies must focus on behavioural competence along with cognitive skills. The book also discusses organizations' desire to ensure a working environment that is vibrant and positive in an attempt to prevent unconstructive or disruptive factors and to ensure improved performances over time. The book is a valuable resource for corporate personnel, as well as for researchers and practitioners in the field

Poverty, Chronic Poverty and Poverty Dynamics (Policy Imperatives) Aasha Kapur Mehta; Shashanka Bhide; Anand Kumar; Amita Shah; SpringerLink (Online service) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Springer, 1st ed. 2018, Singapore, 2018
"This book discusses critical policy issues that need to be addressed if India wishes to achieve the SDG 1 based elusive goal of ending poverty in the country. In its nine chapters, it takes the readers through trends and estimates of poverty in India, explains changes in the way it has been measured over time and the factors that lead to persistence of poverty, draws attention to the fact that hunger is both a cause and an effect of poverty and has gender and age dimensions too. The book revisits strategies that were successful in addressing poverty emanating from situations of conflict, presents a discussion on migration as a critical coping mechanism among poor, analyses the links between ill health and poverty as well as education and poverty to draw attention to the policy imperatives that need attention. India's report card on poverty remains dismal even though there is recognition of the importance of reducing or eliminating or ending it at both national and global levels. Despite rapid economic growth and improvement on a range of development indicators, an unacceptably high proportion of India's population continues to suffer poverty in multiple dimensions. SDG 1 or "ending poverty in all its forms everywhere" cannot be achieved unless policies and poverty alleviation programmes understand and address chronic poverty and its dynamics. This requires that we estimate and understand the extent of poverty, the factors that lead to people getting stuck in it and the ways this can be addressed. It also requires understanding the dynamic nature of poverty or the fact that many of those who are poor are able to move out of poverty as well as the fact that many others who are not poor become impoverished. These are the issues that are comprehensively examined and addressed in this book. In addition to students, teachers and researchers in the areas of development, economic growth, equity and welfare, the book is also of great interest to policy makers, planners and non-government agencies who are concerned with understanding and addressing poverty-related issues in the developing countries."--Page 4 of cover

The Principal and School Improvement: Theorising Discourse, Policy, and Practice (Educational Leadership Theory) Amanda Heffernan Springer Singapore Springer Nature, Educational Leadership Theory, Educational Leadership Theory, 1, 2018
"This book investigates the localised effects of reform by exploring the impact of a school improvement policy agenda on the work of three experienced principals. It presents three longitudinal case studies within a shared specific leadership context in Queensland, Australia. The case studies enable an exploration of the way the principalship in this context has evolved over time, providing deep insights into the practices and beliefs of three experienced school leaders working in a period of rapid and urgent systemic reform. The nature of global reform policy borrowing means that the research and the findings within this monograph are relevant for international audiences. The book describes a new way to understand and theorise the effects of reform policies and associated pressures on school leaders. Using post-structural theory, it provides a better understanding of the specific effects of reform policy ensembles, particularly when combined with an analysis of the ways policy and discourse work together at a wider level to create an environment that disciplines the principalship. Further, it sheds lights on the means of complying with or contesting policy influences and how the work of leaders has changed over time." -- Prové de l'editor

Myanmar’s Integration with the World : Challenges and Policy Options Prabir Kumar De; Ajitava Raychaudhuri Springer Singapore Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2017
This book comprehensively investigates the challenges to Myanmar's access to the global market. Myanmar is a late entrant in the global trade and investment scenario after years of isolation. However, it has large untapped potentials for trade and investment in minerals, agro and forest based industries, other labour intensive industries, services like tourism, IT, etc. Different chapters of the book explore the implication of democratic transition of Myanmar, the progress of Myanmar's industry and infrastructure, its international linkages and feasible options for integrating more in regional economic groups and also analyses how far Myanmar could exploit the global value chain. Although a number of reports have discussed sector specific prospects of Myanmar, this book is an authoritative work on these aspects for policy planners, academicians, researchers as well as potential investors.-- Provided by publisher

Confucianism and the Chinese Self : Re-examining Max Weber’s China Jack Barbalet (auth.) Springer Singapore : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2017, Singapore, 2017
Setting the context for the upheavals and transformations of contemporary China, this text provides a re-assessment of Max Weber’s celebrated sociology of China. Returning to the sources drawn on by Weber in __The Religion of China: Confucianism and Taoism__, it offers an informed account of the Chinese institutions discussed and a concise discussion of Weber’s writings on ‘the rise of modern capitalism’. Notably it subjects Weber’s argument to critical scrutiny, arguing that he drew upon sources which infused the central European imagination of the time, constructing a sense of China in Europe, whilst European writers were constructing a particular image of imperial China and its Confucian framework. Re-examining Weber’s discussion of the role of the individual in Confucian thought and the subordination, in China, of the interests of the individual to those of the political community and the ancestral clan, this book offers a cutting edge contribution to the continuing debate on Weber’s RoC in East Asia today, against the background of the rise of modern capitalism in the “little dragons” of Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea, and the “big dragons” of Japan and the People’s Republic of China.

Foundations of Commutative Rings and Their Modules (Algebra and Applications, 31) Fanggui Wang, Hwankoo Kim Springer; Second Edition 2024, Algebra and Applications, 31, 2, 2024
This book provides an introduction to the foundations and recent developments in commutative algebra. A look at the contents of the first five chapters shows that the topics covered are those usually found in any textbook on commutative algebra. However, this book differs significantly from most commutative algebra textbooks: namely in its treatment of the Dedekind–Mertens formula, the (small) finitistic dimension of a ring, Gorenstein rings, valuation overrings, the valuative dimension, and the Nagata rings. Chapter 6 goes on to present w-modules over commutative rings, as they are most commonly used in torsion theory and multiplicative ideal theory. Chapter 7 deals with multiplicative ideal theory over integral domains. Chapter 8 collects various results of pullbacks, especially Milnor squares and D + M constructions, which are probably the most important example-generating machines. In Chapter 9, coherent rings of finite weak global dimensions are probed, and the local ring of weak global dimension two is elaborated by combining homological tricks and methods of star operation theory. Chapter 10 is devoted to the Grothendieck group of a commutative ring. In particular, the Bass–Quillen problem is discussed. Finally, Chapter 11 introduces relative homological algebra, especially where the related notions of integral domains appearing in classical ideal theory are defined and studied using the class of Gorenstein projective modules. In Chapter 12, in this new edition, properties of cotorsion theories are introduced and show, for any cotorsion pair, how to construct their homology theory. Each section of the book is followed by a selection of exercises of varying difficulty. This book appeals to a wide readership, from graduate students to academic researchers interested in studying commutative algebra.

Auto-ethnography in Public Policy Advocacy : Theory, Policy and Practice Louise Sinden-Carroll Springer Singapore : Imprint: Springer, 1st ed, Place of publication not identified, 2019
This book explores how public policy advocacy can be used to approach policy issue identification, resolution or, at the least, support the management of wicked policy issues. By describing how this type of advocacy draws on participatory action research, including ethnographic and auto-ethnographic models, this book offers a tool for public policy consumer advocates on how to apply the Human Capabilities Approach to address presenting public policy issues worldwide.   By applying these models to the situation of prisoners with hearing loss in New Zealand’s prisons, it identifies multiple causal factors for quality-of-life-limiting marginalization, e.g. social barriers (e.g. disability discrimination); environmental limitations (e.g. geographical and those introduced by incarceration); and individual responses in line with negative attitudes – both social and political, including the State’s denial of prisoners’ right to democratic participation by revoking their right to vote in general elections after sentencing. In addition, two other areas, namely blood safety and broadcast media captioning, are highlighted, showing that the skill of auto-ethnography is transferrable and can be applied to ensure effective consumer advocacy for a diverse range of issues that affect marginalized sectors.

Chemical Thermodynamics in Materials Science (From Basics to Practical Applications) Taishi Matsushita, Kusuhiro Mukai Springer Singapore Springer Nature, 1st ed. 2018, 2018
This textbook covers chemical thermodynamics in materials science from basic to advanced level, especially for iron and steel making processes. To improve a process by applying knowledge of thermodynamics or to assess the calculation results of thermodynamic software, an accurate and systematic understanding of thermodynamics is required. For that purpose, books from which one can learn thermodynamics from the basic to the advanced level are needed, but such books are rarely published. This book bridges the gap between the basics, which are treated in general thermodynamic books, and their application, which are only partially dealt with in most specialized books on a specific field. This textbook can be used to teach the basics of chemical thermodynamics and its applications to beginners. The basic part of the book is written to help learners acquire robust applied skills in an easy-to-understand manner, with in-depth explanations and schematic diagrams included. The same book can be used by advanced learners as well. Those higher-level readers such as post-graduate students and researchers may refer to the basic part of the book to get down to the basic concepts of chemical thermodynamics or to confirm the basic concepts. Abundant pages are also devoted to applications designed to present more advanced applied skills grounded in a deep understanding of the basics. The book contains some 50 examples and their solutions so that readers can learn through self-study.

WHITE GOLD : the commercialisation of rice farming in the lower mekong basin Rob Cramb, (ed.) palgrave macmillan @Springer Singapore, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2020
This open access book is about understanding the processes involved in the transformation of smallholder rice farming in the Lower Mekong Basin from a low-yielding subsistence activity to one producing the surpluses needed for national self-sufficiency and a high-value export industry. For centuries, farmers in the Basin have regarded rice as "white gold", reflecting its centrality to their food security and well-being. In the past four decades, rice has also become a commercial crop of great importance to Mekong farmers, augmenting but not replacing its role in securing their subsistence. This book is based on collaborative research to (a) compare the current situation and trajectories of rice farmers within and between different regions of the Lower Mekong, (b) explore the value chains linking rice farmers with new technologies and input and output markets within and across national borders, and (c) understand the changing role of government policies in facilitating the on-going evolution of commercial rice farming. An introductory section places the research in geographical and historical context. Four major sections deal in turn with studies of rice farming, value chains, and policies in Northeast Thailand, Central Laos, Southeastern Cambodia, and the Mekong Delta. The final section examines the implications for rice policy in the region as a whole. Rob Cramb is Honorary Professor of Agricultural Development in the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences at The University of Queensland, Australia. He has taught, researched, and consulted on agricultural and rural development in Southeast Asia for over forty years. His previous books include Land and Longhouse: Agrarian Change in the Uplands of Sarawak and (with John McCarthy) The Oil Palm Complex: Smallholders, Agribusiness and the State in Indonesia and Malaysia

The fourth edition of this well received book provides an authoritative and up-to-date resource to support good practice in travel medicine, a field that has evolved substantially in recent years. Concretely, there has been intensified monitoring of health problems among travellers, as well as extensive research efforts, which have led to the development of evidence-based approaches to the field. The book includes expert recommendations regarding e.g. immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, travellers diarrhea, altitude sickness, emerging infections, and non-infectious health issues encountered by travellers. It provides a practical approach to the pre-travel consultation and management of most issues that arise in medical care for travellers. In addition, it provides expert advice for high-risk travellers, e.g. those with immunosuppression, the elderly, pregnant women and young children. The text offers a user-friendly, practical handbook for healthcare practitioners during their clinical consultations, as well as nurses and pharmacists. -- Provided by publisher
