Aboard a Flying Saucer: Truman Bethurum and the People of the Planet Clarion Frank G. Wilkinson [Wilkinson, Frank G.] NewParadigmPress.com, 2012
A monstrous disc of burnished steel, the saucer measured 300 feet across and six yards deep at its center. Wingless and free of any visible means of support, the disc floated as if weightless several feet above the scrubby desert brush. The little men crowded around him. One fellow identified himself as the group's leader and, grasping Bethurum's arm firmly, agreed to introduce the Earthling to their ship's captain. As they moved together toward the waiting craft, Bethurum asked his guide what country they called home. Like a character from a Brothers Grimm fairytale, the little man answered cryptically, "Our homes are our castles in a far away land." As they neared the saucer, the whole disc tilted toward them, revealing a landing step with a single hand rail. They ascended and entered the vehicle through a topside doorway...

First Amendment Felon: The Story of Frank Wilkinson, His 132,000 Page FBI File and His Epic Fight for Civil Rights and Liberties (Nation Books) Robert Sherrill Nation Books ; Distributed by Publishers Group West, New York, Enfield, New York State, 2005
Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech or of the press, or the right of people to peaceably assemble. These words have guided the life of Frank Wilkinson, perhaps the nation's staunchest defender of civil liberties, to the degree that Life Magazine, in an issue given over to the two-hundred-year history of the Bill of Rights, featured a lengthy profile of him. This is the story of an ordinary, even conservative, American who became the accidental champion of our right to speak, and (by extension) to think, what we choose. Wilkinson's life has been a David-and-Goliath battle against enemies of the First Amendment. He was jailed in 1958 when HUAC cited him for contempt (the Supreme Court notoriously ratified this decision). From 1956 to 1975, he traveled an average of one hundred days a year in thirty-five states to warn of the liberties under attack by the FBI and its marionettes. His chief antagonist was J. Edgar Hoover, who compiled a 132.000 page dossier on him. First Amendment Felon is written by one of the most celebrated political reporters of our age, charting Wilkinson's life from a college playboy to our most determined defender of the First Amendment.

The dynamics of labour market segmentation : second Conference of the International Working Party on Labour Market Segmentation held at the Freie Universität, West Berlin, 7 to 11 July, 1980 (Second Conference of the International Working Party on Labour Market Segmentation held at the Freie Universität, West Berlin, 7 to 11 July, 1980); edited by Frank Wilkinson London ; New York: Academic Press, Elsevier Ltd., London, 1981
The Dynamics of Labour Market Segmentation is a collection of different papers about the importance of differentiation between groups of workers and the development of employer strategies for controlling the labor process in the market. The book is divided into five parts. Part I discusses the nature of segmentation, duality, the internal labor market, internationalization, and discrimination. Part II tackles the industrial transformation and the evolution of dual labor markets and the paternalism and labor market segmentation theory, and Part III deals with topics such as entrepreneurial strategies of adjustment and internal labor markets; artisan production and economic growth; and outwork and segmented labor markets. Part IV covers the construction of women as second-class workers and the social reproduction and the basic structure of the labor market; Part V explores the labor market segmentation and the business cycle and the relationship between employment and output. The text is recommended for entrepreneurs who wish to understand the labor market as well as social scientists who would like to know the implications of the labor market segmentation not only for the marketplace but also for society as a whole.

Employer Strategy And The Labour Market (social Change And Economic Life Initiative) Wilkinson Rubery, Frank Wilkinson, Jill Rubery Oxford ; New York: Oxford University Press, Social change and economic life initiative, Oxford, New York, England, 1994
The rapid pace of industrial restructuring and the emergence of new employment policies have focused attention on the role of employers in determining the quantity and quality of employment. This book draws on important new data from the ESRC's Social Change and Economic Life Initiative to test, modify, and challenge much of the current academic literature on the determinants of employer policy and how these influence employment structures and individual employment opportunities. The book begins with an authoritative synthesis of the influential debates on labour market segmentation, flexibility, post-Fordism, deskilling, the gendering of work, and the 'new' industrial relations. Ten substantive chapters then extend these debates in several directions. They make significant progress on three fronts: first, they suggest that the determinants of employer policy are both complex and strongly related to product market conditions; secondly, they find that employee attitudes and perceptions are critical to the implementation and effectiveness of employer policy; and, thirdly, they explore the interdependency between internal employment policies and external labour market conditions and begin to develop an integrated approach to internal and external labour markets.

Industrial Relations in the Future: Trends and Possibilities in Britain over the Next Decade (Routledge Revivals) Michael Poole; Taylor & Francis Group; William Brown; Jill Rubery; Keith Sisson; Roger Tarling; Frank Wilkinson Routledge, Routledge Revivals Ser, London, England, 2022
First published in 1984, __Industrial Relations in the Future__ highlights probable developments in Britain’s system of industrial relations into the 1990s. It also provides a basis for further and detailed analysis and debate of issues central to the nation’s future. Written by distinguished scholars in their respective fields, the three main sections give reviews from three contrasting traditions- mainstream industrial relations, industrial sociology and management, and labour economics. These accounts are highly complementary in the ways in which, in each and every case, issues of collective bargaining, managerial strategy and union response, and the behaviour of governments are all set against a broad backcloth of economic, political, and social changes. The authors see the ultimate outcome as depending greatly on the policies and types of action of organised labour, managements and governments, and possibly of wider social movements as well. This book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of labour economics, industrial sociology, economics, and public policy.

John Wilkinson [electronic resource] : King of the Ironmasters Frank Dawson; David Lake The History Press Ltd, Bookwire GmbH, Stroud, 2011
From a farming background in Cumbria, John Wilkinson's remarkable abilities and ambitions ensured his rise to pre-eminence among the gifted pioneers of the industrial revolution. His colleagues and friends were similarly talented characters, including James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood, Richard Crawshay and Thomas Telford. Wilkinson achieved great leaps in the iron industry and munitions, including the first use of sound castings and accurate boring for cannon manufacture, but he was also influential in the development of steam railway engines, waterways, and copper refining, and worked extensively with lead and chemicals. But while Wilkinson's technological triumphs were admired by his contemporaries, his personal affairs were complicated and sometimes tragic. This well-informed and readable book, based on research by the author born of a fascination with Wilkinson after living at his family home, gives a unique insight into the character and thinking of the man Telford named 'King of the Ironmasters'.

Terrorism Versus Democracy: The Liberal State Response (Cass Series on Political Violence) Wilkinson, Paul, Wilkinson, Paul London ; Portland, OR: Frank Cass, Cass series on political violence -- 9, London, Portland, OR, England, 2001
Terrorism Remains A Major Problem For Many Democratic Countries And The Wider International Community. Recent History Shows That It Would Be Wrong To Underestimate Terrorism's Potential Strategic Impact. Terrorism Versus Democracy Examines The Problem Of Liberal Democratic Response. Is It Possible To Draw Some Key Lessons From The Recent Experience Of Democracies In Responding To Terrorism? Are Democracies Fatally Disadvantaged In The Face Of Prolonged And Ruthless Terrorist Campaigns? Does The Only Way To Reduce Significantly Or To End Terrorism Necessarily Involve Major Curtailments Of Democracy, Human Rights, And The Rule Of Law? What Are The Key Ingredients Of An Effective Liberal Democratic Strategy To Deal With Terrorism? Is It Feasible To Develop A Response Which Avoids The Dangers Of Over-reaction And Under-reaction Undermining The Very Democracy One Is Trying To Defend, While At The Same Time Effectively Protecting The Right To Life, The Most Basic Of All Human Rights? All These Question And Many Others Are Examined In Terrorism Versus Democracy. This Book Is Aimed Not Only At Academia But Also At A Wider Readership Including Policy-markers, Legislators, And The Law-enforcement And Security Professions As Well As Members Of The General Public In All Democratic Countries.--jacket. Insurgency And Terrorism -- The Emergence Of Modern Terrorism -- The Weapon Of Terror : Key Trends -- Politics, Diplomacy And Peace Processes : Pathways Out Of Terrorism? -- Law-enforcement, Criminal Justice And The Liberal State -- The Role Of The Military In Combating Terrorism -- Hostage-taking, Sieges And Problems Of Response -- Aviation Security -- The Media And Terrorism -- International Cooperation Against Terrorism -- The Future Of Terrorism? -- Conclusion : Towards A Response To Terrorism Based On Democratic Principles And Respect For Human Rights -- Select Addresses Of Internet Sources On Terrorism -- International Conventions And Protocols Pertaining To International Terrorism. Paul Wilkinson. Includes Bibliographical References (p. [239]-250) And Index.

Advanecd Inorganic Chemistry F. Albert Cotton, Geoffrey Wilkinson, Carlos A. Murillo, Manfred Bochmann John Wiley & Sons, Incorporated, 1999, 1999
For more than a quarter century, Cotton and Wilkinson's Advanced Inorganic Chemistry has been the source that students and professional chemists have turned to for the background needed to understand current research literature in inorganic chemistry and aspects of organometallic chemistry. Like its predecessors, this updated Sixth Edition is organized around the periodic table of elements and provides a systematic treatment of the chemistry of all chemical elements and their compounds. It incorporates important recent developments with an emphasis on advances in the interpretation of structure, bonding, and reactivity. From the reviews of the Fifth Edition:* \"The first place to go when seeking general information about the chemistry of a particular element, especially when up-to-date, authoritative information is desired.\" -Journal of the American Chemical Society.* \"Every student with a serious interest in inorganic chemistry should have [this book].\" -Journal of Chemical Education.* \"A mine of information . . . an invaluable guide.\" -Nature.* \"The standard by which all other inorganic chemistry books are judged.\"-Nouveau Journal de Chimie.* \"A masterly overview of the chemistry of the elements.\"-The Times of London Higher Education Supplement.* \"A bonanza of information on important results and developments which could otherwise easily be overlooked in the general deluge of publications.\" -Angewandte Chemie. This sixth edition of Advanced Inorganic Chemistry is an indispensable work in the field incorporating many new chemical developments, particularly recent theoretical advances in the interpretation of bonding and reactivity in inorganic j compounds. As in previous editions, the chapters devoted to the elements form the core of the book and are covered in sequence of the periodic table. \"Like its predecessors, this updated Sixth Edition is organized around the periodic table...

John Wilkinson : King of the Ironmasters Frank Dawson; edited by David Lake Stroud, Gloucestershire: The History Press, Bookwire GmbH, Stroud, 2011
This well-informed and readable book, based on research by the author born of a fascination with Wilkinson after living at his family home, gives a unique insight into the character and thinking of the man Telford named'King of the Ironmasters'.

Replacement parts : the ethics of procuring and replacing organs in humans Caplan, Dr Arthur L (university Of Pennsylvania/medical Center New York University, Usa New York University, Usa New York University, Usa New York University, Usa New York University, Usa New York University, Usa New York University, Usa New York University, Usa) Washington, D.C.: Georgetown University Press, Washington, DC, 2015
xxii, 296 pages : 27 cm The supply of human organs in the United States continues to lag behind demand. By any objective standard the public policy of "encouraged volunteerism," established with the adoption of the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act in 1968, has failed. How should the United States and the health care community address this ongoing scarcity? What strategies would be both morally acceptable and effective? Noted bioethicist Arthur Caplan and his coeditors have brought together seminal essays and articles from the most significant literature in the fields of medicine, policy, philosophy and religion to help analyze and assess these questions. Caplan's introductory essay explains why present policies are inadequate, and succeeding sections of the book address the following issues: the determination of death and the "dead donor rule"; the morally divisive case of anencephalic infants as organ donors; the sale of cadaveric or live organs; strategies for increasing the number of available organs, including the market; and how some organ seekers, such as Apple's Steve Jobs, "game the system" by creating advantageous circumstances for organ donation Includes bibliographical references and index The dead donor rule, the determination of death, and organ transplantation from (almost?) cadavers -- The dead donor rule and the concept of death : severing the ties that bind them / Elysa R. Animal Social Complexity : Intelligence, Culture, and Individualized Societies de Waal, Frans B. M. (editor);Tyack, Peter L. (editor) Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Reprint 2014, 2003 jan 31
For over 25 years, primatologists have speculated that intelligence, at least in monkeys and apes, evolved as an adaptation to the complicated social milieu of hard-won friendships and bitterly contested rivalries. Yet the Balkanization of animal research has prevented us from studying the same problem in other large-brained, long-lived animals, such as hyenas and elephants, bats and sperm whales. Social complexity turns out to be widespread indeed. For example, in many animal societies one individual's innovation, such as tool use or a hunting technique, may spread within the group, thus creating a distinct culture. As this collection of studies on a wide range of species shows, animals develop a great variety of traditions, which in turn affect fitness and survival. The editors argue that future research into complex animal societies and intelligence will change the perception of animals as gene machines, programmed to act in particular ways and perhaps elevate them to a status much closer to our own. At a time when humans are perceived more biologically than ever before, and animals as more cultural, are we about to witness the dawn of a truly unified social science, one with a distinctly cross-specific perspective?

Georgians, Like All Americans, Experienced The Civil War In A Variety Of Ways. Through Selected Articles Drawn From The New Georgia Encyclopedia (www.georgiaencyclopedia.org), This Collection Chronicles The Diversity Of Georgia's Civil War Experience And Reflects The Most Current Scholarship In Terms Of How The Civil War Has Come To Be Studied, Documented, And Analyzed. The Atlanta Campaign And Sherman's March To The Sea Changed The Course Of The War In 1864, In Terms Both Of The Upheaval And Destruction Inflicted On The State And The Life Span Of The Confederacy. While The Dramatic Events Of 1864 Are Fully Documented, This Companion Gives Equal Coverage To The Many Other Aspects Of The War--naval Encounters And Guerrilla Warfare, Prisons And Hospitals, Factories And Plantations, Politics And Policies --all Of Which Provided Critical Support To The Confederacy's War Effort. The Book Also Explores Home-front Conditions In Depth, With An Emphasis On Emancipation, Dissent, Unionism, And The Experience And Activity Of African Americans And Women. Historians Today Are Far More Conscious Of How Memory--as Public Commemoration, Individual Reminiscence, Historic Preservation, And Literary And Cinematic Depictions--has Shaped The War's Multiple Meanings. Nowhere Is This Legacy More Varied Or More Pronounced Than In Georgia, And A Substantial Part Of This Companion Explores The Many Ways In Which Georgians Have Interpreted The War Experience For Themselves And Others Over The Past 150 Years. At The Outset Of The Sesquicentennial These New Historical Perspectives Allow Us To Appreciate The Civil War As A Complex And Multifaceted Experience For Georgians And For All Southerners. --publisher Description. Job Insecurity and Work Intensification (Routledge Studies in Employment Relations) edited by Brendan Burchell, David Ladipo, and Frank Wilkinson Routledge, 1 edition, November 9, 2001
Based on findings of the recently published Joseph Rowntree Report, this book provides an up-to-the-minute review of current research on flexibility, job insecurity and work intensification. It examines the impact of these developments on individuals, their families, the workplace and the long-term health of the British economy, as well as an analysis of the impact across a wide range of OECD countries including the United States, France, Germany, Sweden and Japan. Key questions addressed include: \* How are jobs more insecure?\* Does just-in-time labour mean more flexible contracts or more flexible workers?\* Does job insecurity entail a 'new flexible morality'?\* How does workplace stress affect individual health and family relationships?Timely and thought-provoking, it is essential reading for all those involved in the fields of employment relations, HRM and the sociology of work.

Terrorism Versus Democracy: The Liberal State Response (Cass Series: Political Violence) Paul Wilkinson ROUTLEDGE; Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2006
'No one understands terrorism better than Paul Wilkinson...if policy makers read this book they will understand the problems better. If terrorists read it they will understand themselves a lot better.'- Michael Clarke, King's College London, University of London, UK This acclaimed study examines both the new terror networks and those that have been around for decades. This new edition brings it up-to-date with the dramatic opening of the twenty-first century, with new chapters on the 9/11 attacks, the growth of international terrorism, the Al Qaeda network and the War on Terror. This text provides us with some much needed criteria for distinguishing between terrorists and freedom fighters and an explanation of the uses of terrorism as a political, social, religious and criminal weapon. Wilkinson also links the use of terrorism to a wider repertoire of struggle. He proposes a variety of possible counter-measures and valuable principles carefully distilled from the recent past to help design a response that is compatible with democratic principles, the rule of law and respect for human rights. This book is essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of terrorism studies, political science and international relations, as well as for policy makers and journalists.

HUNGARIAN-BRITISH DIPLOMACY, 1938-1941: THE ATTEMPT TO MAINTAIN RELATIONS; TRANS. BY TIM WILKINSON ANDRAS D. BAN Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2004
This book deals with the relationship between Britain and Hungary during the crucial years 1938-1941. In addition to archival research in London and Budapest, mostly about the relations of the governments, Bán's work broadens into political, social, intellectual and cultural history. This is one of its exceptional assets, including materials hitherto overlooked or disregarded, as it relates to more than diplomatic history - even though, in dealing with the latter too, Bán's mastery of archival and other evidence is extraordinarily valuable.
