Yet many people, even medical personnel, are unaware of the dangers of poor sleep. Enter Dr. Meir Kryger, a world authority on the science of sleep, with a comprehensive guide to the mysteries of slumber that combines detailed case studies, helpful tables, illustrations, and pragmatic advice. Everyone needs a good night's sleep, and many of us will experience some difficulty sleeping or staying awake over the course of our lifetimes (or know someone who does). Kryger's comprehensive text is a much-needed resource for insomniacs; for those who snore, can't stay awake, or experience disturbing dreams; and for the simply curious. The Virus in the Age of Madness Bernard-Henri Lévy Yale University Press; Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2020
A trenchant look at how the coronavirus reveals the dangerous fault lines of contemporary society As seen on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS: “A stirring alarm addressed to an unsettled world.” (Kirkus Reviews) Forget the world that came before. The author of American Vertigo serves up an incisive look at how COVID-19 reveals the dangerous fault lines of contemporary society. With medical mysteries, rising death tolls, and conspiracy theories beamed minute by minute through the vast web universe, the coronavirus pandemic has irrevocably altered societies around the world. In this sharp essay, world-renowned philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy interrogates the many meanings and metaphors we have assigned to the pandemic—and what they tell us about ourselves. Drawing on the philosophical tradition from Plato and Aristotle to Lacan and Foucault, Lévy asks uncomfortable questions about reality and mythology: he rejects the idea that the virus is a warning from nature, the inevitable result of global capitalism; he questions the heroic status of doctors, asking us to think critically about the loci of authority and power; he challenges the panicked polarization that dominates online discourse. Lucid, incisive, and always original, Lévy takes a bird's-eye view of the most consequential historical event of our time and proposes a way to defend human society from threats to our collective future. A portion of the author's proceeds will be donated to Binc (The Book Industry Charitable Foundation).

Fashioning the body : an intimate history of the silhouette Denis Bruna; Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture Published for Bard Graduate Center, Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture. New York by Yale University Press, New York, New Haven and London, 2015
This unique survey offers fascinating insights into the convoluted transformations employed by both men and women to accommodate the fickle dictates of fashion. With high design, wit, and style, Fashioning the Body tracks the evolution of these sartorial devices-from panniers, crinolines, and push-up bras to chains, zippers, and clasps-concealed beneath outer layers in order to project idealized figures. Women's corsets constricted waists; exaggerated buttocks and hips counterbalanced jutting bust lines; and chic, aerodynamic silhouettes compressed breasts and flattened bellies. Yet masculine fashion has been no stranger to these tortuous practices. Men flaunted their virility by artificially broadening their shoulders, applying padding to their chests, and slipping codpieces over their groins. With more than 200 beautiful illustrations-including reproductions of superb historic advertisements-Denis Bruna reveals the industry and art of these contrivances meant to entice and beguile as well as assert status and power. Contemporary haute-couture designers Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garcons, Christian Lacroix, and Vivienne Westwood are featured in this indiscreet tour of intimate fashion history.

To Describe a Life: Notes from the Intersection of Art and Race Terror (Richard D. Cohen Lectures on African & African American Art) English, Darby, 1974- author Yale University Press; Yale University Press in association with the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research, Harvard University, Richard D. Cohen lectures on African & African American art, New Haven, Connecticut, 2019
A passionate, rigorous, and persuasive look at the helpful complexity of art during a time of profound cultural turmoil By turns historical, critical, and personal, this book examines the use of artand loveas a resource amid the recent wave of shootings by American police of innocent black women and men. Darby English attends to a cluster of artworks created in or for our tumultuous present that address themes of racial violence and representation idiosyncratically, neither offering solutions nor accommodating shallow narratives about difference. In Zoe Leonards Tipping Point , English sees an embodiment of love in the face of brutality; in Kerry James Marshalls untitled 2015 portrait of a black male police officer, a greatly fraught subject treated without apparent judgment; in Pope.Ls Skin Set Drawings , a life project undertaken to challenge codified uses of difference, color, and language; and in a replica of the Lorraine Motelthe site of Martin Luther King, Jr.s assassination in 1968a monument to the unfinished business of the integrated nonviolent movement for civil rights. For English, the consideration of art is a paradigm of social life, because art is something we must share. Powerful, challenging, and timely, To Describe a Life is an invitation to rethink what life in ongoing crisis is and can beand, indeed, to discover how art can help.

Election Meltdown : Dirty Tricks, Distrust, and the Threat to American Democracy Richard L. Hasen New Haven and London: Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2020
From the nation's leading expert, an indispensable analysis of key threats to the integrity of the 2020 American presidential election As the 2020 presidential campaign begins to take shape, there is widespread distrust of the fairness and accuracy of American elections. In this timely and accessible book, Richard L. Hasen uses riveting stories illustrating four factors increasing the mistrust. Voter suppression has escalated as a Republican tool aimed to depress turnout of likely Democratic voters, fueling suspicion. Pockets of incompetence in election administration, often in large cities controlled by Democrats, have created an opening to claims of unfairness. Old-fashioned and new-fangled dirty tricks, including foreign and domestic misinformation campaigns via social media, threaten electoral integrity. Inflammatory rhetoric about “stolen” elections supercharges distrust among hardcore partisans. Taking into account how each of these threats has manifested in recent years—most notably in the 2016 and 2018 elections—Hasen offers concrete steps that need to be taken to restore trust in American elections before the democratic process is completely undermined.

The American Circus Rachel Adams [et al.]; Susan Weber, Kenneth L. Ames, Matthew Wittmann ed New York: Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture ; New Haven ; London: Yale University Press, New York, New Haven, London, United States, 2012
A showcase of the "golden age" of the circus in America The circus is a source of nostalgia for Americans of all ages, either from memories of attending P. T. Barnum's "Greatest Show on Earth," or through the colorful evocations in many movies, television programs, and books. Interest in the circus phenomenon is unflagging, yet there have been few publications that look closely at how the circus's European origins were refashioned for an American audience. Lavishly illustrated and carefully researched, this volume explores how American culture, values, demography, and business practices altered the fundamental nature of the European circus, and how, by the end of the 19th century, they had transformed it into a distinctly American pastime. At the peak of its cultural significance, the circus was a sophisticated combination of theater and business, and made effective use of advertising, train travel, and hyperbole. The subjects in The American Circus reflect this complexity, ranging widely from thematic explorations of circus music and elephants to moreclosely focused studies of objects such as circus toys, souvenirs, and performers' costumes. The book also explores the dark and even nefarious side of the circus, and its associations with marginalized dimensions of American life and culture. With contributions from leading scholars, this stylishly designed volume aims to identify the salient features of an Americanized cultural product and to analyze its appeal for American audiences. Published for the Bard Graduate Center, NY Exhibition Bard Graduate Center, NY (09/21/1202/03/13)

The Politics of Cultural Retreat : Imperial Bureaucracy in Austrian Galicia, 1772-1867 Vushko, Iryna; Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2015
<div>An illuminating history of state-building, nationalism, and bureaucracy, this book tells the story of how an international cohort of Austrian officials from Bohemia, Hungary, the Hapsburg Netherlands, Italy, and several German states administered Galicia from its annexation from Poland-Lithuania in 1772 until the beginning of Polish autonomy in 1867. Historian Iryna Vushko examines the interactions between these German-speaking bureaucrats and the local Galician population of Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. She reveals how Enlightenment-inspired theories of modernity and supranational uniformity essentially backfired, ultimately bringing about results that starkly contradicted the original intentions and ideals of the imperial governors.</div>

Princes and Painters in Mughal Delhi, 1707-1857 William Dalrymple; Yuthika Sharma; Asia Society. Museum Asia Society Museum; In association with Yale University Press; Yale University Press, New York, NY, New Haven [Conn.], New York State, 2012
Between the years 1707 and 1857, the cultural center of Delhi in North India was the locus of a dramatic shift of power with the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of the British Raj. This critical transitional period altered Indian culture, politics, and art, and brought unprecedented artistic innovation and experimentation. The artistic flowering of this time is evident in jewel-like portraits, miniature paintings, striking panoramas, and exquisite decorative arts crafted for Mughal emperors and European residents alike. Sumptuous color illustrations of such works illuminate the pages of this book, painting a vivid portrait of this important city and its art, artists, and patrons. Masterworks by major Mughal artists, such as Nidha Mal and Ghulam Ali Khan, and works by non-Mughal artists demonstrate the dynamic interplay of artistic production at this time. This largely overlooked period is explored in thought-provoking essays by a panel of distinguished scholars of Indian art, history, and literature to present an engaging look at this dynamic artistic culture in the midst of rapid change.

An intriguing new look at the historical significance of Rembrandt's representations of Christ With the creation of the dramatic Supper at Emmaus (Louvre)and a series of intimate oil sketches of Christ on oak panels, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) overturned the entire history of Christian art. Traditionally, when depicting Christ, artists had relied on rigidly copied prototypes and icons. Among Rembrandt's innovations was his use of a Jewish model to portray a Christ imbued with empathy, gentleness, grace, and faithfulness to nature. Lavishly illustrated, this captivating and important book presents the seven known panels, along with more than 60 paintings, drawings, and prints by Rembrandt and his pupils. Essays by expert contributors offer insights into the production of the panels and their relationship to other works in Rembrandt's oeuvre; how he changed the meaning and status of the canonical image of Christ in northern European art; and much more. Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus is a marvelously intriguing study of how one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age revolutionized an aspect of art history dating to antiquity. Hamlet : Fold on Fold Josipovici, Gabriel, 1940- author New Haven: Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2016
William Shakespeare's Hamlet is probably the best-known and most commented upon work of literature in Western culture. The paradox is that it is at once utterly familiar and strangely elusive—very like our own selves, argues Gabriel Josipovici in this stimulating and original study. Moreover, our desire to master this elusiveness, to “pluck the heart out of its mystery,” as Hamlet himself says, precisely mirrors what is going on in the play; and what Shakespeare's play demonstrates is that to conceive human character (and works of art) in this way is profoundly misguided.  Rather than rushing to conclusions or setting out a theory of what Hamlet is “about,” therefore, we should read and watch patiently and openly, allowing the play to unfold before us in its own time and trying to see each moment in the context of the whole. Josipovici's valuable book is thus an exercise in analysis which puts the physical experience of watching and reading at the heart of the critical process—at once a practical introduction to a great and much-loved play and a sophisticated intervention in some of the key questions of theory and aesthetics of our time.

This Engaging Book Is The First Full Study Of The Satirical Print In Seventeenth-century England From The Rule Of James I To The Regicide. It Considers Graphic Satire Both As A Particular Pictorial Category Within The Wider Medium Of Print And As A Vehicle For Political Agitation, Criticism And Debate. Helen Pierce Demonstrates That Graphic Satire Formed An Integral Part Of A Wider Culture Of Political Propaganda And Critique During This Period, And She Presents Many Witty And Satirical Prints In The Context Of Such Related Media As Manuscript Verses, Ballads, Pamphlets And Plays. Published for The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. This book is the first to examine the ways in which 18th- & 19th-century British artists portrayed the archaic past. Sam Smiles argues that ancient Britain was variously seen as a noble epoch of wisdom & patriotism or as a period of savagery & barbarism, & that these representations changed over time to suit current political fashions & changing ideas of national identity.

Clear and Present Safety : The World Has Never Been Better and Why That Matters to Americans Michael A. Cohen; Micah Zenko New Haven ; London: Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2019
An eye-opening look at the history of national security fear-mongering in America and how it distracts citizens from the issues that really matter. What most frightens the average American? Terrorism. North Korea. Iran. But what if none of these are probable or consequential threats to America? What if the world today is safer, freer, wealthier, healthier, and better educated than ever before? What if the real dangers to Americans are noncommunicable diseases, gun violence, drug overdoses-even hospital infections? In this compelling look at what they call the "Threat-Industrial Complex," Michael A. Cohen and Micah Zenko explain why politicians, policy analysts, academics, and journalists are misleading Americans about foreign threats and ignoring more serious national security challenges at home. Cohen and Zenko argue that we should ignore Washington's threat-mongering and focus instead on furthering extraordinary global advances in human development and economic and political cooperation. At home, we should focus on that which actually harms us and undermines our quality of life: substandard schools and healthcare, inadequate infrastructure, gun violence, income inequality, and political paralysis. -- Provided by publisher

The Moral Economy: Why Good Incentives Are No Substitute for Good Citizens (Castle Lecture Series) Bowles, Samuel, author Yale University Press Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2016
Should the idea of economic man—the amoral and self-interested Homo economicus—determine how we expect people to respond to monetary rewards, punishments, and other incentives? Samuel Bowles answers with a resounding “no.” Policies that follow from this paradigm, he shows, may “crowd out” ethical and generous motives and thus backfire. Â But incentives per se are not really the culprit. Bowles shows that crowding out occurs when the message conveyed by fines and rewards is that self-interest is expected, that the employer thinks the workforce is lazy, or that the citizen cannot otherwise be trusted to contribute to the public good. Using historical and recent case studies as well as behavioral experiments, Bowles shows how well-designed incentives can crowd in the civic motives on which good governance depends.

The lure of the exotic : Gauguin in New York collections ; [... in conjunction with the Exhibition "Gauguin in New York Collections: The Lure of the Exotic" organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and held there from June 18 - October 20, 2002 Paul Gauguin; Colta Feller Ives; Susan Alyson Stein; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Exhibition Gauguin in New York Collections - the Lure of the Exotic Metropolitan Museum of Art ; Yale University Press, New York, New Haven, New York State, 2002
"The legendary, pioneering French artist who famously left his family and a career in finance to paint and live like a native in the South Seas, Paul Gauguin in fact began sailing to far-off lands during childhood. As a boy he lived for a time with relatives in Peru, and in his teens, in the merchant marine and the military, he visited South America, India, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the North Sea. He believed firmly in his difference, often referring to himself as a "savage," and once he discovered his passion for art he had to create forms that were original and unique. "What does it matter that I set myself apart from other people? For most I shall be an enigina, but for a few I shall be a poet...," he wrote.". "This volume accompanies a major exhibition of Gauguin's work in New York collections held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Surprisingly, the first major show devoted to Gauguin in New York since the Metropolitan Museum presented a retrospective of his work in 1959, it anticipates the centennial of the artist's death in 1903 and signals the nineteenth anniversary of his debut in New York collections. Four authors from the Metropolitan Museum illuminate aspects of the subject in their texts.". "All works in the exhibition, as well as rich comparative material, are reproduced, Notes, a bibliography, a checklist of works in the exhibition, and an index are supplied."--BOOK JACKET.

Princes and Painters in Mughal Delhi, 1707-1857 William Dalrymple (editor), Yuthika Sharma (editor) Asia Society Museum; In association with Yale University Press; Yale University Press, 1, 2012

Why Liberalism Failed (Politics and Culture) Deneen, Patrick J. Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2018
Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? Of the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism, communism, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it *is* an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy, it has given rise to the most far-reaching, comprehensive state system in human history. Here, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.Number of Formats : 0Title Parm D : Why Liberalism Failedwords : 61435Single Author : Deneen, Patrick J.Title Length : 021Record ID : TEMPLATE ERROR Value: unknown field idNumber of Words in Auth: 3Sorted Author by LN, FN: Deneen, Patrick J.All Identifiers : goodreads:34746473, isbn:9780300223446Uncomma Author : Patrick J. The Idea of the English Landscape Painter: Genius as Alibi in the Early Nineteenth Century (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in Britis) Kriz, Kay Dian , 1945- New Haven, Conn.: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press, New Haven, Conn, Connecticut, 1997
English landscape painting changed dramatically during the time of Turner and Girtinthe new style of painting was seen as more natural and expressive of the imagination and character of the artist himself. The new artistic "geniuses" were hailed by critics as shining stars of a truly English school of landscape painting. In this book Dian Kriz critically examines the emergence of the Romantic concept of the landscape genius, arguing that it was a category produced by critics, painters, and the public, in opposition to other ways of thinking about the artist in the period around 1800. She places the artistic genius of the (male) landscape painter in relation to the (female) amateur, the connoisseur, the decadent Frenchman, and the entrepreneur. Kriz studies the way in which the application of paint was thought to represent the character of the artist and particular forms of Englishness. Examining a wide range of contemporary paintings, prints, and written texts, she determines how a "visual rhetoric" that relied heavily on brilliant surface effects was understood to participate in discourses on art, politics, commerce, and morality during the decades in which England was at war, militarily and culturally, with Napoleonic France. Kriz shows that the power of the landscape genius lay in his ability to negotiate the seemingly contradictory demands of a market in luxury commodities and a social ideal of a virile and virtuous Englishness. The genius's encounter with external nature provided him with an alibi that served to obscure his activities as an economic producer in a competitive market society. Published for the Paul Mellon Center for Studies in British Art

The Swami Vivekananda's speech to the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 is the centerpiece of Indian artist Jitish Kallat's new work, Public Notice 3 . The installation went on view at the Art Institute of Chicago on September 11, 2010, exactly 108 years after Vivekananda delivered his groundbreaking address calling for an end to "bigotry and fanaticism." The text of the speech appears on the risers of the Art Institute of Chicago's Grand Staircase where it is illuminated in the five colorsred, orange, yellow, blue, and greendesignated by the United States Homeland Security Advisory System to signify threat levels. This companion book, which documents the installation, is the first full-scale exploration of Kallat's work published by a North American institution. Along with an interview with the artist, essays contextualize Public Notice 3 within the space of the installation and evaluate Kallat's oeuvre within an international context. The changing atmosphere : a global challenge John W. Firor Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New ed., New Haven, 1992
We stand at the threshold of major changes in the earth's atmosphere, facing serious challenges from acid rain, ozone depletion, and global warming. Continually acted on by natural forces, the atmosphere has always been in a state of flux, but in the last decades the problems of atmospheric change have been gravely exacerbated by pollution resulting from human activities. In this important book, a widely known authority in atmospheric research describes the causes of acid rain, ozone depletion, and global warming and the evidence for each one's recent acceleration, and he provides practical and long-range suggestions for controlling these and other forms of atmospheric deterioration. In clear and accessible language, John Firor discusses how the emission of sulfur and nitrogen substances into the air leads to acid rain, how the release of chlorine-bearing gases into the air causes destruction of ozone in the high atmosphere, and how the addition of infrared trapping gases to the atmosphere restricts the loss of radiation from the earth and thus leads to a heating of the climate. Firor argues that although it is almost impossible to bring the spread of chemicals into the air to a complete halt, steps to slow air pollution are technically feasible and in many cases economically beneficial. He describes these strategies, cautioning that they must be coordinated with a larger goal of lessening the toal impact human activities have on the earth. According to Firor, we can work toward this goal by attempting to stabilize populations (in the developed as well as the developing world), protect forests, encourage the use of modern energy-efficient technology in Third World countries (and the United States), and reduce poverty worldwide.

The Mystery of Sleep : Why a Good Night's Rest Is Vital to a Better, Healthier Life Meir Kryger, M.D Yale University Press, Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2017
**An authoritative and accessible guide to what happens when we shut our eyes at night** We spend a third of our lives in bed, but how much do we really understand about how sleep affects us? In the past forty years, scientists have discovered that our sleep (or lack of it) can affect nearly every aspect of our waking lives. Poor sleep could be a sign of a disease, the result of a vitamin or iron deficiency, or the cause of numerous other problems, both sleeping and waking. Everyone needs a good night’s sleep, and many of us will experience some difficulty sleeping or staying awake over the course of our lifetimes (or know someone who does). Kryger’s comprehensive text is a much‐needed resource for insomniacs; for those who snore, can’t stay awake, or experience disturbing dreams; and for the simply curious. Uniquely wide ranging, __The Mystery of Sleep__ is more than a handbook; it is a guide to the world of sleep and the mysterious disorders that affect it.

Pieter de Hooch, one of the most famous and innovative artists of Holland's Golden Age, played a pioneering role in the Delft School and m the advancement of genre painting and naturalism in the seventeenth century. Best known for his expressive use of interior space and sun-filled courtyards, de Hooch's command of perspective and responsiveness to light and atmosphere were unprecedented, and his work undoubtedly influenced his younger but more famous colleague Vermeer. This beautiful book examines de Hooch's position in Dutch genre painting and the social and political context of his art in the United Netherlands. It also addresses the artist's favored themes -- in particular the virtue of domesticity -- and relates them to Dutch civilization, literature, and the history of the family in the Protestant republic. Peter Sutton investigates de Hooch's approach to narration and his practice of encoding commentaries through symbolism, gesture, and such time-honored devices as the painting within the painting. In addition, he discusses new technical data concerning the artist's painting techniques, materials, and working methods. Through word and image, the book traces de Hooch's artistic development from his early beloved Delft period pictures to his more elegant and aristocratic paintings from his later years in Amsterdam.

William Nicholson (the Paul Mellon Centre For Studies In British Art) Sanford Schwartz; William Nicholson New Haven: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press, Studies in British art, New Haven (Conn.), ©2004
"William Nicholson (1872-1949) was an painter of ravishingly beautiful still lifes and landscapes. He was also an internationally known postermaker and graphic artist as well as a theater designer and children's book illustrator and author. Yet he holds an uncertain place in British art, largely because he left no statements about his aims, and, indirectly, because his son, the better-known artist Ben Nicholson, subtly downplayed his father's achievements." "In this book, the first full critical biography of William Nicholson, Sanford Schwartz shows that the artist's output has a coherent philosophical and psychological unity very much in harmony with his times. Schwartz argues that in many of his formats, Nicholson was concerned with the delights and deceptions of sheer looking, and that he shared goals both with contemporaries such as Walter Sickert and with a host of twentieth-century painters including Stanley Spencer and Lucian Freud." "The private William Nicholson is also portrayed in a new and more complex light. Schwartz asserts that Nicholson's life was a series of rivalries and collaborations with many individuals, and that his uneasy relationship with his son Ben (which came to a head with their invovlement with the same woman) provides a major thread in Schwartz's narrative. Illustrated with paintings, drawings and photographs, this book reassesses Nicholson's achievement and suggests a new place for him within twentieth-century art."--BOOK JACKET.

Photographs are made of time; they are literally projections of past states of their subjects. This visually striking meditation on architecture in photography explores the intersection between these two ways of embodying the past. Photographs of buildings, Joel Smith argues, are simultaneously the agents, vehicles, and cargo of social memory. In The Life and Death of Buildings photographers as canonical as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Laura Gilpin, Lewis W. Hine, and William Henry Fox Talbot enter into visual dialogue with amateurs, architects, propagandists, and insurance adjusters. Rather than examine photographers aims in isolation, Smith considers how their images reflect and inflect the passage of time. Much as a buildings shifting function and circumstances substantially alter its significance, a photograph comes to be coauthored by history, growing layers of meaning to which its maker had no access.

The Pre-Raphaelite Landscape, Second edition Allen Staley; Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art New Haven: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press, [2nd ed.], New Haven, Connecticut, 2001
"In this completely revised and updated second edition, Staley takes into account important paintings that have recently come to light, as well as current understandings of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and its legacy. The author provides a comprehensive account of the background and formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the role of landscape in major Pre-Raphaelite figurative paintings, and the emergence and impact of a school of Pre-Raphaelite landscape painting as well as its place in the wider tradition of British landscape painting." Attention is paid to the significant influence of John Ruskin and his active involvement with many of the artists." Hamlet : Fold on Fold Josipovici, Gabriel Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, 2016
William Shakespeare's __Hamlet__ is probably the best-known and most commented upon work of literature in Western culture. Rather than rushing to conclusions or setting out a theory of what __Hamlet__ is “about,” therefore, we should read and watch patiently and openly, allowing the play to unfold before us in its own time and trying to see each moment in the context of the whole. Josipovici’s valuable book is thus an exercise in analysis which puts the physical experience of watching and reading at the heart of the critical process—at once a practical introduction to a great and much-loved play and a sophisticated intervention in some of the key questions of theory and aesthetics of our time.

G. F. Watts: The Last Great Victorian (Studies in British Art) Gould, Veronica Franklin; Watts, George Frederick, 1817-1904 New Haven: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press, Studies in British art, New Haven (Conn.), ©2004
<p><P>George Frederic Watts (1817&#8211;1904) was a titanic figure in nineteenth-century British art. The father of British Symbolism and portrait painter of his age, he forged a controversial career that spanned the reign of Queen Victoria. This book, the first in-depth biography of Watts, sheds new light on the pioneering spirit and breadth of mind of the artist.<br>Drawing on Watts&#8217;s abundant personal correspondence and diaries and an array of other contemporary documents, the book chronicles the artist&#8217;s career and personal life, including his friendships with Edward Burne-Jones, Frederic Leighton, William Gladstone, and Alfred Tennyson and his relationships with a series of singular women. The book also examines Watts&#8217;s wide reforming zeal and political agenda as well as his role and dealings in the Victorian art world.</P></p><h3>Library Journal</h3><p>In this first comprehensive study of Victorian artist George Frederic Watts (1817- 1904), historian Gould reveals new details about his career as a respected portraitist. An advocate for social and educational reform, Watts painted many of the leading artists, writers, reformers, and statesmen of his time, including Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, William Gladstone, John Stuart Mill, Edward Burne-Jones, and William Morris. Since he was also an advocate of a national collection of paintings of important British personages, Watts's portraits later formed the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Although sought after for his talent, Watts could not be categorized as part of an artistic movement like the Pre-Raphaelites. Instead, his mythological and allegorical works foreshadowed the style of British symbolism. Adding to the book's depth, much of Watt's personal correspondence and diaries are examined to chronicle his relationships with many leading Victorian artistic and intellectual figures. A very scholarly and thoroughly researched work, this book is recommended for all academic libraries supporting art history programs. [The year 2004 marked the centenary of Watts's death.-Ed.]-Sandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll. Lib., MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.</p>

T. S. Eliot writes the letters contained in this volume during a period of weighty responsibilities as husband and increasing demands as editor and publisher. He cultivates the support of prominent guarantors to secure the future of his periodical, *The Monthly Criterion*, even as he loyally looks after his wife, Vivien, now home after months in a French psychiatric hospital.Eliot corresponds with writers throughout Great Britain, Europe, and the United States while also forging links with the foremost reviews in London, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, and Milan. He generously promotes many other writers, among them Louis Zukofsky and Edward Dahlberg, and manages to complete a variety of writings himself, including the much-loved poem *A Song for Simeon*, a brilliant introduction to Wilkie Collins’s *The Moonstone*, and many more.Wörter : 360280

Bargaining on Europe : Britain and the First Common Market, 1860-1892 Peter T. Marsh; Professor Peter T Marsh Yale University Press; Yale University Press, New Haven, ©1999
The British experience of founding and then distancing itself from the first common market in the Victorian age is barely remembered while the second is being established. But there are many resonances with the modern European experience, in particular, membership of the European Monetary Union.
