The journal aims to encourage the practice of commentary as a creative form of intellectual work and to provide a forum for dialogue and reflection on the past, present, and future of this ancient genre of writing. By aligning itself, not with any particular discipline, but with a particular mode of production, Glossator gives expression to the fact that praxis founds theory. GLOSSATOR.ORG

lgli/John C. Inscoe - The Civil War in Georgia (2011, University of Georgia Press).pdf
The Civil War in Georgia : A New Georgia Encyclopedia Companion John C. Inscoe, Jarrod Atchison, Anne J. Bailey, Keith S. Bohannon, Katherine Brackett University of Georgia Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, 2011
Georgians, like all Americans, experienced the Civil War in a variety of ways. Through selected articles drawn from the New Georgia Encyclopedia (www.georgiaencyclopedia.org), this collection chronicles the diversity of Georgia's Civil War experience and reflects the most current scholarship in terms of how the Civil War has come to be studied, documented, and analyzed. The Atlanta campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea changed the course of the war in 1864, in terms both of the upheaval and destruction inflicted on the state and the life span of the Confederacy. While the dramatic events of 1864 are fully documented, this companion gives equal coverage to the many other aspects of the war--naval encounters and guerrilla warfare, prisons and hospitals, factories and plantations, politics and policies-- all of which provided critical support to the Confederacy's war effort. The book also explores home-front conditions in depth, with an emphasis on emancipation, dissent, Unionism, and the experience and activity of African Americans and women. Historians today are far more conscious of how memory--as public commemoration, individual reminiscence, historic preservation, and literary and cinematic depictions--has shaped the war's multiple meanings. Nowhere is this legacy more varied or more pronounced than in Georgia, and a substantial part of this companion explores the many ways in which Georgians have interpreted the war experience for themselves and others over the past 150 years. At the outset of the sesquicentennial these new historical perspectives allow us to appreciate the Civil War as a complex and multifaceted experience for Georgians and for all southerners. A Project of the New Georgia Encyclopedia; Published in Association with the Georgia Humanities Council and the University System of Georgia/GALILEO.

Elephant Seals : Population Ecology, Behavior, and Physiology Burney J. Le Boeuf (editor); Richard M. Laws (editor) University of California Press, Reprint 2020, Berkeley, CA, 2020
The largest of all seals, elephant seals rank among the most impressive of marine mammals. They are renowned for their spectacular recovery from near-extinction at the end of the nineteenth century when seal hunters nearly eliminated the entire northern species. No other vertebrate has come so close to extinction and made such a complete recovery. The physiological extremes that elephant seals can tolerate are also remarkable: females fast for a month while lactating, and the largest breeding males fast for over one hundred days during the breeding seasons, at which times both sexes lose forty percent of their body weight. Elephant seals dive constantly during their long foraging migrations, spending more time under water than most whales and diving deeper and longer than any other marine mammal. This first book-length discussion of elephant seals brings together worldwide expertise from scientists who describe and debate recent research, including the history and status of various populations, their life-history tactics, and other findings obtained with the help of modern microcomputer diving instruments attached to free-ranging seals. Essential for all marine mammalogists for its information and its methodological innovations, Elephant Seals will also illuminate current debates about species extinctions and possible means of preventing them. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1994.

While The Dramatic Events Of 1864 Are Fully Documented, This Companion Gives Equal Coverage To The Many Other Aspects Of The War--naval Encounters And Guerrilla Warfare, Prisons And Hospitals, Factories And Plantations, Politics And Policies --all Of Which Provided Critical Support To The Confederacy's War Effort. Maps and Diagrams: Their Compilation and Construction (University paperbacks) Francis John Monkhouse; Henry Robert Wilkinson Methuen Distributed in USA by Harper & Row, [University paperbacks -- UP75], 3rd ed. revised and enlarged., London, England, 1978
'Maps are drawn by men and not turned out automatically,' wrote the eminent American geographer, J. K. Wright, in his delightful essay 'Map Makers are Human'. But proficiency in the art of drawing maps is not attained without some systematic training. The discipline necessary to attain this proficiency involves three (1) the handling of raw material and data; (2) a critical knowledge of cartographical principles and techniques; and (3) actual drawing practice to attain some degree of manual dexterity and skill in the execution of maps.

The Radiotherapy of Malignant Disease, Second Edition P. C. Williams, J. M. Wilkinson, H. Notley (auth.), R. C. S. Pointon MA, FRCP, FRCR (eds.) Springer-Verlag London, 2, 1991
Radiotherapy as practiced at the renowned Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute is brought up to date in this new, second edition of **The Radiotherapy of Malignant Disease**. The contributions are all written by current or former members of the hospital staff. The opening chapters provide the necessary background information: basic physics and radiobiology, principles of chemotherapy, and mould room practice. The main part of the book represents the very essence of the Manchester school of thought. It is designed to show in detail how to treat, by X-rays and radium, malignant tumors in various anatomical sites. The book thus gives practical guidance on clinical techniques necessary in all disciplines involved in the management of malignant disease. **From the reviews of the first edition:** " ...It should be in the library of every radiotherapy department, and in the hands of every trainee..." #__British Medical__ __Journal__#1 "...This book should be an important and interesting reference book on the shelves of any medical library or radiotherapist's office." #__American Journal of__ __Roentgenology__#2 "...There can...be few established radiotherapists, described by the editors as the epitome of the oncologist, who did not read the earlier versions of the Manchester textbook and may still use it for reference. This latest edition is costly but it should continue to be read by all trainees aspiring to the DMRT and FRCR, wherever they may be in training and whatever the philosophy of their teachers." #__Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine__#3

Pharmacokinetics : An Introduction Prof. Dr. E. Gladtke, Prof. Dr. H. M. von Hattingberg (auth.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 1, 1979
This is a little book with no great pretensions. The authors do not claim it to be world-startling nor Nobel- or Pulitzer-prize-winning. It is a valuable primer for pharmacokinetics for those desiring a proper initiation into previously assumed mysteries. It is fully intended as an introduction to the basic concept of pharmacokinetics and will be welcomed by all who wish to apply its principles to their own disciplines, whether in life sciences or medicine, without being confused by excess mathematics. It is edited by two well-known German scientists who are primarily practicing pediatricians and who use pharmacokinetics in their daily work, in a field of medicine where the proper adjustment of doses for infants and children is a delicate and life-preserving art. They were trained as pediatricians and as pharmacokinetists by the world-renowned Profes sor F. HARTMUT DOST, who uniquely synthesized these two disciplines and who, as a pioneer in this field, published the first book on pharmacokine tics in 1953. In their own right, the editors have conducted excellent and unique research on the effect and fate of drugs and have followed up the unexpected changes in drug action accompanying the rapid developments encountered in the initial hours, days, and weeks after birth. You will find some interesting Germanisms in this book a la Professor DOST. I personally feel that these will give some spice to their renditions. Erscheinungsdatum: 01.04.1979

(Tier 3), Cambridge, 1996
This book is a core introductory text to the subject of toxicology and the use of toxicological information for risk assessment by chemists. Increasingly, chemists are being required by law to advise on the safe handling of chemicals. Few chemists, however, have been trained in toxicology, and the subject is often not covered in a chemistry degree curriculum. It is to address this problem that this book has been written. Fundamental Toxicology for Chemists contains a proposed curriculum for teaching toxicology to chemists, which gives a firm grounding in the basics. With this book as a guide, lecturers will be able to design courses that cover all their students needs. In addition, students in all areas of chemistry will find it invaluable. Fundamental Toxicology for Chemists offers a unique assessment of the subject specifically for chemists. It is both comprehensible and fully comprehensive, covering developing areas such as reproduction, behavioural and ecological toxicology. The book has been approved by the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists) committees on toxicology and the teaching of chemistry. It has a comprehensive index and an extensive glossary of terms, and will have lasting value to all chemists as a reference, and a text book.

Advances in Microbial Physiology, Volume 50 (Advances in Microbial Physiology) Robert K. Poole (Eds.) Elsevier, Academic Press, Advances in Microbial Physiology, Advances in Microbial Physiology 50, 1, 2005
<b>Advances in Microbial Physiology</b> is one of the most successful and prestigious series from Academic Press, an imprint of Elsevier. It publishes topical and important reviews, interpreting physiology to include all material that contributes to our understanding of how microorganisms and their component parts work.<br><br>First published in 1967, it is now in its 50th volume. The Editors have always striven to interpret microbial physiology in the broadest context and have never restricted the contents to “traditional” views of whole cell physiology. Now edited by Professor Robert Poole, University of Sheffield, <b>Advances in Microbial Physiology</b> continues to be an influential and very well reviewed series.<br><br>* In 2004, the Institute for Scientific Information released figures showing that the series had an Impact Factor of 8.947, with a half-life of 6.3 years, placing it 5th in the highly competitive category of Microbiology.

Computer simulation of biomolecular systems. Volume 3 : theoretical and experimental applications P. H. Hünenberger, W. F. van Gunsteren (auth.), Wilfred F. van Gunsteren, Paul K. Weiner, Anthony J. Wilkinson (eds.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint : Springer, Computer Simulations of Biomolecular Systems 3, 1, 1997
The third volume in the series on Computer Simulation of Biomolecular Systems continues with the format introduced in the first volume [1] and elaborated in the second volume [2]. The primary emphasis is on the methodological aspects of simulations, although there are some chapters that present the results obtained for specific systems of biological interest. The focus of this volume has changed somewhat since there are several chapters devoted to structure-based ligand design, which had only a single chapter in the second volume. It seems useful to set the stage for this volume by quoting from my preface to Volume 2 [2]. "The long-range 'goal of molecular approaches to biology is to describe living systems in terms of chemistry and physics. Over the last fifty years great progress has been made in applying the equations representing the underlying physical laws to chemical problems involv ing the structures and reactions of small molecules. Corresponding studies of mesoscopic systems have been undertaken much more recently. Molecular dynamics simulations, which are the primary focus of this volume, represent the most important theoretical approach to macromolecules of biological interest." ...
