Creating R & D Incentives for Medicines for Neglected Diseases : an Economic Analysis of Parallel Imports, Patents, and Alternative Mechanisms to Stimulate Pharmaceutical Research
Frank Müller-Langer (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage, Wiesbaden, Ökonomische Analyse des Rechts Ser, 65189 Weisbaden, Secaucus, July 2009
Virtually no research is targeted at developing medicines for tropical diseases as the expected market returns from R&D into these diseases in the private pharmaceuticals sector are too low. Frank Müller-Langer addresses the market failure with respect to R&D for medicines for tropical diseases and the lack of short-term access to affordable medicines in poor countries. The author analyzes additional push and pull mechanisms to stimulate R&D for pharmaceutical products alongside patent protection which may help mitigate the problem of those consumers in poor countries who lack access to affordable medicines. Furthermore, he reasons that a global regime of banning parallel trade from low-income countries to high-income countries is desirable from a developing country’s perspective.

The Marketing-Sales-Finance Triangle : An Empirical Investigation of Finance-Related Interactions & Managerial Challenges Among Marketing, Sales, and Finance Actors
Dirk Weissbrich (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage, Wiesbaden, 10.1007/97, 2009
This thesis addresses important research gaps in the literature on the marketing-finance interface. While there have been considerable research activities on marketing-finance topics such as marketing assets or marketing metrics, only few scholars have looked at the organizational interface between marketing and finance. We know surprisingly little about how marketing, sales, and finance units actually work together within organizations. In his PhD thesis Dirk Weissbrich chooses a qualitative research design to gain insight into this unknown organizational phenomenon. Drawing on 78 face-to-face interviews with managers from marketing, sales, and finance in 42 companies, the author develops a better understanding of the organizational link between marketing, sales, and finance units. Specifically, Dirk Weissbrich makes three major research contributions. First, the author introduces the idea of the marketing-sales-finance triangle and explores eight finance-related key interaction fields and decision areas: (1) Plans & Budgets, (2) Reports & Analyses, (3) Cost Optimization, (4) Calculations & Investment Management, (5) Financial Accounting, (6) Debtor Management, (7) Compliance & Risk Management, and (8) Pricing. The author describes in detail how marketing, sales, and finance cooperate in each key interaction field and decision area. Second, the author discusses each function's value added to the respective interaction field and decision area in the marketing-sales-finance-triangle. On the basis of these interaction field specific insights, a more general picture on the role of each function in the marketing-sales-finance triangle is developed.

A Quantitative Liquidity Model for Banks ||
Christian Schmaltz (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, 10.1007/97, 2009
Liquidity is a core resource and its management is a core activity of banks. Nevertheless, liquidity management has not received much attention during the last decades, as liquidity has not been perceived as scarce. This perception has clearly changed during the?nancial crisis 2007/2009. Facing dried interbank markets, many banks were desperately looking for liquidity. Despite its crucial role, the modeling techniques for bank liquidity are so far rather simple, which sharply contrasts the sophisticated techniques used for other risks as credit or market. Furthermore, German regulators now allow banks to use internal liquidity models for regulatory reporting. This leads to the need to develop a liquidity model for banks that uses advanced stochastic techniques, incorporates all liquidity key variables, discusses internal liquidity allocation and optimization. The work of Christian Schmaltz closes this gap in the literature. There are three major contributions: 1. Key liquidity variables are derived. 2. An innovative way to internally allocate liquidity is developed. 3. Transfer prices of liquidity are calculated. The key variables are derived from the liquidity condition of banks and the channels to generate additional cash?ows. Customer deposits and credit, funding spread and fu- ing capacity, haircuts and short term interest rates are identi?ed as key liquidity variables. Liquidity risk is the consequence of the non-deterministic nature of these variables, which may take large adverse values (liquidity crisis). Having identi?ed the key variables, a l- uidity model is set up by assuming a particular stochastic process for each variable.

Innovation and Ontologies: Structuring the Early Stages of Innovation Management (Markt- und Unternehmensentwicklung Markets and Organisations)
Angelika C. Bullinger (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, Markt- und Unternehmensentwicklung Markets and Organisations, 1st ed. 2009, Wiesbaden, 2009
Innovation requires a balanced amount of openness and structure, especially in its early phases. Ontologies as logical representations of knowledge bear the potential of bridging this obvious dilemma and provide a promising approach to significantly improve management during the early stages of the innovation process. Angelika C. Bullinger examines ontologies as an approach to modeling, analyzing and comparing the fuzzy front end of innovation management, in particular idea assessment and selection. She uses an extensive array of theories and methods, combining the knowledge bases of business administration and information systems. Starting from theoretical informatics, she elaborates, applies and tests a methodology for ontology development for use in business management. Based on empirical data, she models ontologically the moment of idea assessment and selection on a company-specific, industry-typical and generic level. Included are action-oriented implications for the implementation of the methodology in business reality.

Balancing Exploration and Exploitation by Creating Organizational Think Tanks
Tatjana-Xenia Puhan (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, Gabler Edition Wissenschaft, 1st ed. 2008, Wiesbaden, 2008
Key for successful knowledge management is a balance between exploration and exploitation. Danger arises when exploration is neglected in favour of exploitation since that may result in an organization which lacks innovation capability. In order to prevent this, an idea has been put forward in recent knowledge management research called ambidexterity, which means the simultaneous and balanced pursuing of both exploration and exploitations activities. Tatjana-Xenia Puhan follows up on this idea by concluding that ambidexterity need not necessarily be implemented in one single organization but can also be realised in a network of associated organizations. The interorganizational ambidexterity is based on co-specialisation: one organisation is devoted solely to exploration while associated organizations focus on their competences in exploitation. Furthermore, the author develops the concept of think tanks as organizations that concentrate on radical innovations while their network associates exploit this newly generated knowledge commercially. Against the background of the hitherto largely inconclusive debate, this work is an outstanding contribution both to knowledge management research and to practical organisational structuring.

Integrated Capacity and Price Control in Revenue Management : A Fuzzy System Approach
Michael Becher (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler : GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, Gabler Edition Wissenschaft, 1. Aufl, Wiesbaden, 2008
Due to tough competition and increased customer-orientation, companies must improve their management of revenue objectives. In the context of a fluctuating demand and the unknown price behaviour of customers, the practice-oriented development of a revenue management approach for an integrated control of capacities and prices becomes essential. Michael Becher develops a concept for an integrated capacity and price control in revenue management. His concept is based on fuzzy expert controllers and complies with the defined business and application requirements. The resulting approach is evaluated in three applications: capacity control in waste incineration industry, price control in hotels and integrated capacity and price control in goods distribution. The results show that the amount of coverage can be increased due to the application of the proposed concept.

Content Infrastructure Management: Results Of An Empirical Study In The Print Industry (markt- Und Unternehmensentwicklung / Markets And Organisations)
Alexander Benlian (auth.)
Deutscher Universitäts-Verlag ℗ب́Đ GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden Deutscher Universit̃ts-Verlag : GWV Fachverlage, Markt- und Unternehmensentwicklung, 1. Aufl, Wiesbaden, Germany, 2006
Because of the increasing digitization and modularity of content media companies are challenged to exploit the gained degrees of freedom in the management of their most valuable asset. Opportunities abound - reutilizing, bundling and pushing content through diverse media channels leading to higher returns on investment. Although many studies have tackled the problem of properly allocating data, processing power or IT-related decision rights in the past, the topic of media content allocation has been neglected so far. Taking into account strategic, organizational and technological factors Alexander Benlian explores the question of whether to centralize or to decentralize media content. The findings basically emphasize the need to design publishing organizations that follow certain patterns of congruency and consistency in order to realize greater effectiveness. These observed patterns or invariabilities may provide infrastructure managers with a benchmark against which to reassess the design of their own content allocation configuration. Aligned content infrastructures can be considered to dramatically increase the smoothness of content flows and to enhance production and bundling capabilities.

Prof. Dr. Kornelia Möller, Prof. Dr. Petra Hanke (auth.), Kornelia Möller, Petra Hanke, Christina Beinbrech, Anna Katharina Hein, Thilo Kleickmann, Ruth Schages (eds.)
VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Jahrbuch Grundschulforschung, 1. Aufl, Wiesbaden, 2007

The Alignment Performance Link in Purchasing and Supply Management: Performance Implications of Fit between Business Strategy, Purchasing Strategy, ... Logistik und Supply Chain Management)
Christian Baier (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, Gabler Edition Wissenschaft, 1st ed, Wiesbaden, 2008
Foreword In today’s markets, companies face ever growing international competition, radical technological change, and increasingly demanding customers. These developments force managers to focus on core competencies and result in decreasing in-house val- add across industries. Adequate supplier selection and competent management of the supply base have thus become key firm success factors. As a consequence, purchasing and supply management (PSM) has developed into a powerful weapon for contributing to a firm’s competitive advantage along dimensions such as cost, quality, and inno- tion. Such a contribution, however, critically depends upon the alignment of purch- ing strategies and practices with the company’s overall business strategy. Only if the purchasing function supports the firm’s competitive position can it effectively improve profitability. Unfortunately, existing research still lacks both the theoretical concepts and empirical foundation to provide detailed guidance to practitioners regarding how such alignment can be achieved and what impact it should have on firm performance. The doctoral thesis presented by Christian Baier develops and tests a comprehensive model of the alignment-performance link in PSM in order to close this knowledge gap. Drawing on insights from the market-based view, the resource-based view, princip- agent theory, and contingency theory, the author derives a solid theoretical understa- ing of the relationships between business strategy and strategies and practices at the functional level. By applying the theory of production competence to the PSM context, two critical levels of alignment are identified: strategic alignment, i. e. Erscheinungsdatum: 15.05.2008

Examining Innovation Management from a Fair Process Perspective
Thomas Limberg (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, Gabler Edition Wissenschaft : Schriftenreihe der HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management, 1. ed, Wiesbaden, 2008
Companies nowadays still differ considerably in that they interact with employees. This interaction depends on different organisational cultures, leadership styles, and the ways in which information and communication take place. A recent trend, even in economic theory, is that interactions are valued in themselves and not solely to achieve rational economic maximisation. People care about outcomes, but they also care about the interactional processes that produce those outcomes. Thomas Limberg investigates a new approach to the management of human relationships in a knowledge-based work environment and analyses the relationship between fair process and innovation performance. Key findings are that social interactions have a significant influence on execution performance in organisations, and fairness can have positive effects on innovative behaviour and therefore on innovation performance. In the transition from a production-based to a knowledge-based economy, fair process is becoming a powerful tool for managing human interactions and for influencing attitudes and behaviours that are so critical in reaching high innovation performance.

Reasons for Frequent Failure in Mergers and Acquisitions : A Comprehensive Analysis
Thomas Straub (auth.)
Deutscher Universitätsverlag, 10.1007/97, 2007
This is an important book. The topic is important, and Dr. Straub approaches it with a new approach. In fact, one could say that the book's importance stems from its lack of disciplinary focus, relying instead on a holistic understanding of the phenomenon. Too often, academic research is pursued within a narrowly defined academic “field”, necessarily blinding researchers to realities whose essence is inter-disciplinary. This is typically the case with research on Mergers & Acquisitions, making most of the “findings” relatively unimportant for practice. Yet M&A are a crucial part of business development. It is evident that companies'long-term success is at least partially dependent on their strategic actions. And these are often shaped in practice by merger and acquisition activity. Thus phenomena as varied as globalization, value-chain optimization, or product diversification are often implemented as M&A operations. In no few cases, M&A activity constitutes the company's strategy. If, as noted above, strategic moves do have an impact on lo- term success, it follows that M&A activities are at the core of many business successes... and failures. As such, they play an important role in the development of the whole society: wealth is created (or destroyed) mostly by companies. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the phenomenon is its very high failure rate.

Organizing Cross-Functional New Product Development Projects : The Phase-Specific Effects of Organizational Antecedents
Tobias Huth (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler : GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, 1st ed. 2008, Wiesbaden, 2008
Companies are looking for better ways to develop innovative products. In this regard, cross-functional teams (CFTs) are considered to be a key success factor. However, previous research indicates that the use of CFTs does not automatically lead to successful innovation. It appears that the employment of CFTs has to be implemented as systematically as well as other organizational activities. On the basis of a survey conducted with 133 project managers, Tobias Huth presents an empirical analysis of the organizational success drivers of new cross-functional product development projects. The investigated antecedents are distinguished by organic and mechanistic designs as well as boundary spanning activities. New territory is entered by applying a phase-specific perspective. It is shown that certain antecedents (e.g. participative decision-making, top management support) should be permanently employed, while others (e.g. steering committees, central budgets) should be managed dynamically. Teams are advised to adopt a dynamic blend of flexibility and discipline while constantly interacting with external sources inside the organization.

The Boundaries of Innovation and Entrepreneurship : Conceptual Background and Essays on Selected Theoretical and Empirical Aspects
Alexander Brem (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, 10.1007/97, 2008
Foreword Both academic fields, innovation management and entrepreneurship, have been developed over years quite separately and (if at all) with only few contacts and interactions between each other. But looking at this fields with a'fresh eye', they can be interpreted as essential parts of an holistic macro-model of innovation and entrepreneurship. This model describes the whole process from the creative early steps of idea management and opportunity recognition over idea development up to the (successful) commercialization of these ideas. It is one of the characteristics of this process that the focus in the early steps is on innovation management, while entrepreneurial skills and methods are more important in its later phases. This book by Alexander Brem, which is based on his doctoral dissertation he successfully completed and defended in 2007, introduces in its first chapter such a new and interesting macro-model of innovation and ent- preneurship, which - by the way - helps us to identify and locate the s- entific questions and problems he is dealing with in the following parts of his book: In the second chapter, he (re-)considers the well-known mark- pull/technology-push-debate, shows empirical evidence that the integ- tion of both views might be the critical success factor. One of the hi- lights of this book is presented in chapter three - the concept of an in- grated idea management which shows many innovative elements and is supported by empirical results of an exploratory study.

Inter-organisational Design Of Voluntary Sustainability Initiatives: Increasing The Legitimacy Of Sustainability Strategies For Supply Chains (supply Chain Management)
Nils Peters (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage, Wiesbaden, 1, 2010
Voluntary sustainability initiatives (VSIs) have become the most applied approach for companies to set environmental or social obligations for their supply-chains. However, companies face two main challenges in the design of VSIs: Firstly, they recognise acceptance problems by different stakeholders and opposition by competing initiatives. Secondly, they experience significant resource demands to set up VSIs and ask for more efficient solutions. Nils Peters addresses these challenges by empirically analysing the key resources and complementarities that enable companies to efficiently establish effective designs of VSIs both in terms of participants’ compliance and the acceptance of initiative-external stakeholders. Komparative empirische Sozialforschung
Tilo Beckers, Ulrich Rosar (auth.), Tilo Beckers, Klaus Birkelbach, Jörg Hagenah, Ulrich Rosar (eds.)
VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, 1. Aufl., Wiesbaden, Germany, 2010
Darunter finden sich u.a.

Melanie Weber (auth.)
VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften. in Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, VS research, 1. Aufl., Wiesbaden, Germany, 2008
Erscheinungsdatum: 14.08.2008

Pricing Portfolio Credit Derivatives by Means of Evolutionary Algorithms
Svenja Hager (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Gabler Edition Wissenschaft, 1. ed, Wiesbaden, 2008
With the recent development of non-standard credit derivatives, it has become increasingly important to develop pricing models for these illiquid products which are consistent with the pricing models and the market quotes of related liquid instruments. Svenja Hager aims at pricing non-standard illiquid portfolio credit derivatives which are related to standard CDO tranches with the same underlying portfolio of obligors. Instead of assuming a homogeneous dependence structure between the default times of different obligors, as it is assumed in the standard market model, the author focuses on the use of heterogeneous correlation structures. The intention is to find a correlation matrix sufficiently flexible so that all tranche spreads of a CDO structure can be reproduced simultaneously. This allows for consistent pricing. The calibrated model can then be used to determine the price of non-standard contracts. As there is no standard optimization technique to derive the correlation structure from market prices, Evolutionary Algorithms are applied.

From Purchasing to Supply Management: A Study of the Benefits and Critical Factors of Evolution to Best Practice (Einkauf, Logistik und Supply Chain Management)
Michael A. Stolle (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Einkauf, Logistik und Supply Chain Management, 1st ed. 2008, Wiesbaden, 2008
For more than 20 years, researchers and practitioners claimed a transition from traditional purchasing to strategic supply management. However, very few companies actually have been able to make this transition happen. Given the fact that most of the actual practices applied by world-class companies are well known, the question remains why so many companies failed along the way. What does it take to overcome the barriers of purchasing evolution - and what are the benefits? Based on more than 200 interviews with Chief Purchasing Officers around the world and statistical analyses, Michael Stolle presents a new perspective on the challenges of organizational change. The empirical results reveal a complex hierarchy of organizational factors that have to be developed to increase purchasing performance. "Visible" purchasing best practices are only the tip of the iceberg and are based on a profound shift of mindsets of the entire organization. The insights offered by this book will help to understand the mechanics and success criteria of purchasing evolution to supply management.

A Quantitative Liquidity Model for Banks
Christian Schmaltz (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, Gabler research, 1st ed, Wiesbaden, 2009
Internal liquidity models for banks have gained considerable importance since German regulators have decided to accept them for regulatory reporting. Christian Schmaltz identifies product cash flows, funding spread, funding capacity, haircuts, and short-term interest rates as key liquidity variables. Then, he assumes specific stochastic processes for the key variables leading to a particular liquidity model. The modelling focus lies on the product cash flow that is described by a jump-diffusion process. Finally, the author applies the model to the allocation, internal pricing, and optimization of liquidity.

Family Policies in the Context of Family Change: The Nordic Countries in Comparative Perspective (German and English Edition)
Ilona Ostner, Christoph Schmitt (auth.), Ilona Ostner, Christoph Schmitt (eds.)
VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Zeitschrift für Familienforschung / Sonderheft, 6, 1. Aufl, Wiesbaden, 2008
A better work-life balance for working parents has become an imperative social policy issue in most contemporary welfare states and sets two objectives: to increase flexible labour forces as well as the number of daycare facilities and to improve children ́s overall education. Drawing upon up-to-date empirical data, the volume provides detailed insights in policies targeting families, above all, women as (to be) parents and workers. It compares experiences made in Nordic countries during the last 20 years. These countries have become paragons for policies that apparently work in favour of improving the work-life balance, equal employment opportunities and public child care. The Netherlands, Germany and the UK are taken in as countries that provide contrasts in employment patterns and family-related policies. The volume is a timely contribution to ongoing debates on ‘policies that work’ and related quests for policy-learning in regard to boosting female employment, maintaining, even increasing, birth-rates and investing in human resources.

Legitimacy Needs as Drivers of Business Exit
Carolin Decker (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, 65189 Weisbaden : Secaucus, May 2008
A diversified firm’s withdrawal from a business unit, i.e. business exit, is a significant phenomenon in management practice. Although divestitures are highly relevant in practice, the acquisition of business units attracts much more attention in strategic management research. Carolin Decker develops and empirically applies a framework in which business exits serve the purpose of re-establishing a firm’s previously harmed legitimacy. She suggests four types of legitimacy needs that are to be satisfied with the divestiture of a business unit and the simultaneous pursuit of strategic reorientation. The author tests the theoretical framework with secondary data on 213 business exits. Her findings support the idea that legitimacy needs drive the likelihood of fit-enhancing business exits in divesting firms.

Trust within Organizations of the New Economy: A Cross-Industrial Study (International Management Studies)
Marco Tulio Zanini (auth.)
Deutscher Universitäts-Verlag | GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden; Deutscher Universitäts-Verlag, 1, 2007
The role of trust in governing institutions has been disputed for years. Increasing uncertainty and people’s personal concerns about future perspectives seem to have created an increasing need for what we call trust. Simultaneously, the same uncertainty that induces this increased demand for trust seems to be undermining it. Marco Tulio Zanini examines the effects of different industry-specific institutional framework constraints on the level of trust within business organizations, particularly the possible differences in old and new economy. Based on the results of a survey carried out in seven major companies from different sectors of the Brazilian economy, the author shows that trust is more likely to be found in relatively stable, hierarchical and bureaucratic organizations whereas there is comparatively little trust in new economy firms.

Discrete Mathematics in Statistical Physics: Introductory Lectures (Advanced Lectures in Mathematics)
Dr. Martin Loebl (auth.)
Vieweg+Teubner Verlag Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, Wiesbaden, 10.1007/97, 2010
The book first describes connections between some basic problems and technics of combinatorics and statistical physics. The discrete mathematics and physics terminology are related to each other. Using the established connections, some exciting activities in one field are shown from a perspective of the other field. The purpose of the book is to emphasize these interactions as a strong and successful tool. In fact, this attitude has been a strong trend in both research communities recently. It also naturally leads to many open problems, some of which seem to be basic. Hopefully, this book will help making these exciting problems attractive to advanced students and researchers. Basic concepts - Introduction to Graph Theory - Trees and electrical networks – Matroids - Geometric representations of graphs - Game of dualities - The zeta function and graph polynomials – Knots - 2D Ising and dimer models - Advanced Graduate Students in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Sciences - Researchers Prof. Dr. Martin Loebl, Dept. of Mathematics, Charles University, Prague

Migration und Bürgerbewusstsein: Perspektiven Politischer Bildung in Europa
Prof. Dr. Dirk Lange (auth.), Dirk Lange (eds.)
VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften; VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Bürgerbewusstsein, Schriften zur politischen Kultur und politischen Bildung -- Bd. 1, 1. Aufl., Wiesbaden, Germany, 2008

New Metrics for Value-Based Management: Enhancement of Performance Measurement and Empirical Evidence on Value-Relevance (Unternehmensführung & Controlling)
Annette Holler (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, 10.1007/97, 2009
Still today, the vast majority of the German DAX 30 corporations are explicitly com- ted to the shareholder value idea. However, the stock return to shareholders is an inappropriate measure for internal performance management, so that companies revert to so-called Value-Based Management Systems. These systems derive accounti- based performance measures, which shall quantify whether and how much shareholder value has been generated by the management over a specific period (overall and by business unit). Data applied for calculating the performance measure has to be publicly available and, preferably, also separately disclosed, to allow capital market participants to project results of the performance measure on the stock price. Various metrics (net earnings, residual income, EVA, REVA), which also demonstrated some correlation with stock returns in empirical studies, have been implemented for performance measurement in the past, but these measures still show methodological deficits and also the correlation with the stock performance can still be increased considerably. Also in this respect, the study of Annette Holler makes a substantial contribution, demonstrating that two new metrics (CRI, CEVA) show superior results both methodologically and in the empirical test. To date, such an examination of various yet existing and newly developed performance measures has not been known to me. Hence, the dissertation of Ms. Holler extends, in an amazing way, preceding academic research.

User Generated Branding: Integrating User Generated Content into Brand Management (Innovatives Markenmanagement)
Ulrike Arnhold (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, Wiesbaden, Innovatives Markenmanagement, 1st ed. 2010, Wiesbaden, 2010
What is the value of user generated content in branding? Do social media activities such as brand communities and blogs rather harm or strengthen the brand? Ulrike Arnhold investigates these burning questions, introducing the concept of user generated branding. From a brand management perspective she analyses the impact of interactive marketing programmes in Web 2.0, evaluating user generated content as a tool of the brand communication mix. Her book provides not only a comprehensive empiric analysis but also managerial implications. Thus, this pioneer study will help both scholars and practitioners to gain a thorough understanding of the roots, strategies and applications of user generated content in branding.

Task, firm size, and organizational structure in management consulting : an empirical analysis from a contingency perspective
Michael Graubner (auth.)
Deutscher Universitätsverlag, 10.1007/97, 2006
Foreword The management consulting industry has grown into a sizeable eco nomic sector and employment market in the outgoing 20• century. Globally operating management consulting firms, with thousands of consultants, have emerged. They coexist alongside many small consultancies and single practi tioners. As a result, a remarkable diversity in the organizational structure of management consulting firms has developed. Organizational structure is of utmost importance for consultancies as it directly impacts their business and employment models. Yet, little scientific explanation has been offered so far on the factors accounting for the diversity of organizational structure in manage ment consulting. Michael Graubner explores this contemporary topic. His research is guided by the contingency theory of organizations, one of the classical organi zation theory schools of thought that has been traditionally applied to investi gate organizational structure in manufacturing, banking, and the public sector. The author thoroughly reviews the different aspects of contingency theor- contingency factors, constructs of organizational structure, the concept of fit between contingencies and structure, organic vs. bureaucratic theory - and reflects on them in the light of other organization theory schools of thought.

Efficient Methods for WCDMA Radio Network Planning and Optimization (Advanced Studies Mobile Research Center Bremen)
Ulrich Türke (auth.)
Deutscher Universitäts-Verlag | GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, Advanced studies Mobile Research Center Bremen, 1. ed, Wiesbaden, 2007
Elaborate planning is of paramount importance for the cost-efficient implementation and operation of modern mobile radio networks. Fast and precise methods for the performance evaluation are key ingredients of the planning process. Current planning methods, however, often lack accuracy and computational efficiency. Ulrich Türke introduces innovative models and algorithms for the evaluation of WCDMA/UMTS network performance. He establishes an advanced snapshot analysis method which allows the efficient and accurate analysis of large radio networks. The author develops two statistical evaluation methods which furnish quick approximations of relevant results from snapshot simulations. Finally, he discusses the application of these methods to automatic network optimization. The developed strategies are successfully applied in a commercial radio network planning and optimization tool.

Transparenz: Multidisziplinäre Durchsichten durch Phänomene und Theorien des Undurchsichtigen (zu | schriften der Zeppelin Universität. zwischen Wirtschaft, Kultur und Politik) (German Edition)
Nico Stehr, Cornelia Wallner (auth.), Stephan A. Jansen, Eckhard Schröter, Nico Stehr (eds.)

Integrated Market and Credit Portfolio Models: Risk Measurement and Computational Aspects (neue betriebswirtschaftliche forschung (nbf) (361))
Peter Grundke (auth.)
Betriebswirtschaftlicher Verlag Dr. Th. Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, neue betriebswirtschaftliche forschung (nbf), 361, Wiesbaden, 2008
Due to their business activities, banks are exposed to many different risk types. Aggregating various risk exposures to a comprehensive risk position is an important but up-to-date not satisfactorily solved task. This shortfall goes back to conceptual problems of constructing an appropriate risk model and to the computational burden of determining a loss distribution that comprises all relevant risk types. Peter Grundke deals with both problems. On the one hand, he extends a standard credit portfolio model by correlated interest rate and credit spread risk. The analysis shows that the economic capital needed as a buffer to absorb unexpected losses in a portfolio can be severely underestimated when relevant market risk factors are neglected. On the other hand, computational aspects are addressed. Particularly those problems are discussed which arise when computational tools developed for standard portfolio models are applied to integrated market and credit portfolio models.

Managing Diversity in Intergovernmental Organisations
Björn A. Peters (auth.)
VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften. in Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, VS research, 1st ed, Wiesbaden, 2008
Intensifying worldwide environmental changes as well as political, cultural, religious, and economic crises have made intergovernmental organisations (IGOs) important instruments in international and global cooperation. In order to cope with their diverse stakeholders, it is more imperative than ever for intergovernmental organisations to engage in personnel policy on an international scale. Successful diversity management is an essential prerequisite for organisational performance, conflict management, and dynamics of IGOs. Björn A. Peters examines the challenges of diversity and managing diversity in IGOs on the basis of the Mekong River Commission case study.

Antecedents of Venture Firms’ Internationalization : A Conjoint Analysis of International Entrepreneurship in the Net Economy
Julia Christofor (auth.)
Gabler / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, 10.1007/97, 2008
The objective of Julia Christofor's thesis is to analyze and explain the propensity of firms and their respective entrepreneurs to internationalize. The focus of this thesis is primarily on firms with information-technology-based business models, i.e. Electronic-Business-Firms, which create value via digital networks. Such firms are often referred to as „Born Globals“. It can therefore be assumed that on the basis of the distinct characteristics of the world wide web and because the market participants are globally interconnected via digital networks, these newly founded firms are more likely to internationalize early in their life cycle. Furthermore, because there have been fundamental changes in the technological, economic and societal spheres, the internationalization process and the propensity of these firms to offer their products on international markets may not necessarily be explained with the help of classical theories of internationalization. At the same time, the management of the newly founded E-Business firms, which are active in and pressured to thrive in a global competitive environment, are confronted with completely new challenges. The theoretical foundations presented from the academic internationalization literature stream only go some way to explaining the internationalization behavior of young E-Business-firms. This is especially due to the fact that these approaches basically relate to international, multinational and established firms.

VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, 1. Aufl, Wiesbaden, 2006

A Theory of Marketing : Outline of a Social Systems Perspective
Marius K. Lüdicke (auth.)
Deutscher Universitätsverlag, Gabler Edition Wissenschaft, 1st ed, Wiesbaden, 2006
Marketing has become one of the most influential forces in contemporary market economies. Yet despite ubiquitous empirical presence, uncountable textbook definitions, and sixty years of scholarly work, a coherent sociological understanding of this powerful concept is still amiss. Drawing on Luhmannian social systems theory, historical analysis, and four qualitative studies, the author theorizes on the marketing function as a self-contained system of communications. It is argued that marketing systems prosper within a host organization if and as long as they successfully influence observers' preferences towards particular brands. On these conceptual foundations a comprehensive brand- and communication-centered theory is developed that fulfills Alderson', Cox' and Bartels' foundational requirements for a general theory of marketing in an unprecedented way.

Peter Delling (auth.)
Gabler Verlag / GWV Fachverlage GmbH, Wiesbaden, 10.1007/97, 2010
