Poles in Defence of Britain: A Day-by-Day Chronology of Polish Day and Night Fighter Pilot Operations: July 1940 - June 1941 Gretzyngier, Robert Grub Street the Basement, 2005
To the Polish volunteers who were to fly and fight so brilliantly and tenaciously throughout the Battle of Britain, the United Kingdom was justifiably known as ‘Last Hope Island’. Many of them lost their lives, many achieved glory. This book is a tremendous account of their contribution in those hectic days before the RAF began to take the offensive across the Channel.

Victory fighters : the veterans' story : winning the battle for supremacy in the skies over Western Europe ; 1941-1945 Stephen Darlow Grub Street the Basement, London, England, 2005

A collection of eyewitness accounts of the struggle that raged in the skies over occupied Europe after the Battle of Britain during World War II. Expertly selected and interwoven by Stephen Darlow, Victory Fighters centers on the stories of six pilots and one navigator, the telling of which covers every aspect of this battle over land and sea. The author describes and analyzes the relevant command decisions from the highest level down, and against this background the men give their accounts from the start of their flying careers through to the preparations for operation Overlord, the invasion itself, the liberation of France, the crossing of the Rhine, to the end of the war in Europe on VE-Day. Through their eyes, the reader is introduced to a series of different tasks and situations, a multitude of aircraft types—Sunderlands, Mustangs, Tempests, Typhoons, Spitfires, Whirlwinds, Mosquitoes—and a great many squadrons. Having conducted numerous interviews and undertaken diligent research of documents, diaries and correspondence, the author has produced a fitting testament to these men and the countless others they represent.

To hell and back : true life experiences of bomber command at war Mel Rolfe Grub Street the Basement, New Ed edition, October 1997
Classic stories of gallantry in World War Two A new edition of Mel Rolfe's successful book containing twenty dramatic but true stories of Bomber Command adventures. Some of them defy belief - like the RAF bomb aimer who was blown out of his Liberator over Warsaw at 400ft without a parachute and made a poignant return in 1989 to witness the unveiling of a memorial on the crash site. Others defy logic - like two men of the same crew who survived a terrible crash, neither aware of the other's existence but both saved by the tolling of the same church bell. All are riveting. A journalist by profession, Rolfe has conducted his interviews and prepared the stories in such a way as to take the reader into the events as they happened. To read these accounts is to step back into the war itself.

Favourite food : new ways with the world's best recipes Dupleix, Jill; Dupleix, Jill. Old food Grub Street the Basement, November 30, 2004
Australian-born Jill Dupleix was the food editor of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Melbourne Age for six years from 1994 to 2000 until she was offered the coveted position as The Times Cook in London. This is a plum food-writing role; there have only ever been three previous Times Cooks since the position was created in 1955. It's easy to see why Jill was poached by The Times because her simple, relaxed style of recipes has earned her a well deserved following and less than eighteen months into her weekly columns she was voted Cookery Writer of the Year by The Guild of Food Writers. Favourite Food was the follow up to her ground breaking first big colour cook book, New Food, and Jill says of Favourite Food 'I wanted to do a 'sequel' that applied the same modern, light touch to the best old, authentic, regional 'grandmother's' recipes of around the world. We shouldn't lose these great old recipes - you should try the Ancient Roman Baked Custard - it's incredibly modern - but we do need to reinterpret a few to be easier and lighter and healthier and more relevant. Also go for the Pad Thai noodles, drunken peaches, and pasta with peas.'

Recipes from the Spanish Kitchen Nicholas Butcher Grub Street Cookery, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., [N.p.], 2012
Learn to make the dishes of Spain, and get a taste of its unique culture and history. This blend of cookbook and travelogue focuses on the traditional cooking of Spain. It starts with a journey through the country, region by region—followed by chapters on tapas, salads, soups, vegetables, eggs, rice, sauces, fish and shellfish, meat, poultry, and game, and puddings. With vibrant flavors and uncomplicated ingredients, Spanish cuisine has its roots firmly in home cooking and has developed out of the ingenious use of local raw ingredients: olives, almonds, saffron, garlic, paprika—together with magnificent fish, shellfish, and charcuterie. The author’s enthusiasm for Spanish cooking permeates every page as he explores his favorite dishes, the culture and history behind them, and how best to recreate them. Their origins lie in the authentic cuisine of the Spanish cities, towns and countryside. From the bustling capital Madrid and Basque seaside towns to rustic Andalucia, he highlights the pillars of Spanish cooking, and the culture in which the food is grown, prepared, and eaten.

Sassicaia : The Original Super Tuscan by Marco Fini; photography by Stefano Hunyady; [translations by Kate Singleton and Mark Roberts; editing by Kelley F. Hurst and Kate Singleton] Grub Street The Basement, Florence, Italy], Italy, 2000
Italian restauranteurs voted Sassicaia wine of the 20th century over the elite of Barlo, Barbaresco and Brunello di Montalcino. Yet the story of the meteroic rise to supremacy of a wine from a grape variety new to Tuscany, grown in a place previously considered unsuitable for quality wines is nothing short of astounding.

Colman Andrews explores this whole territory of Catalan cooking, from its French, Roman and Moorish roots to today's modern interpretation. To the Last Ridge : The World War One Experiences of W H Downing W. H. Downing, W.H. Downing Grub Street Publishing, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., London, 2002
**This soldier's WWI account of trench warfare is "a masterpiece among the chronicles of war" (__The Australian__).** Written just after the heat of the battle, this is the personal account of an ordinary soldier's experience of one of the most horrific series of battles ever fought—Fleurbaix, Bapaume, Beaumetz, Lagnicourt, Bullecourt, the Menin Road, Villers-Bretonneux, Péronne, and Mont Saint-Quentin. W. H. Downing, who was a law student in Melbourne before fighting on the Western Front and earning the Military Medal, describes not only the mud, the rats, the constant pounding of the guns, the deaths, and the futility, but also the humor and the heroism of one of the most compelling periods in world history. His writing is spare but vivid, and presents a graphic description of an ordinary person's struggle to survive.

Beyond courage : air sea rescue by Walrus Squadrons in the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian Seas, 1942-1945 Norman L. R. Franks Grub Street the Basement, 2003;2013
This new book covers the adventures of 283, 284, 293 and 294 Walrus Squadrons, operating from North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Sardinia. The pilots, like their counterparts in England, knew of the dangers of landing on the sea. It was a daunting task attempting to rescue downed airmen as they had often to operate in bad weather, and near hostile coasts. Airmen who were bobbing about in dinghies, or even just in their Mae West life jackets, were difficult to locate. Rescues from the cold sea needed to be speedy affairs, especially of those survivors not in dinghies, and the Walrus aircrew were always aware that time was of the essence. Moreover, rescues near a hostile shore often resulted in gunfire from German or Italian gunners. Missions were always treacherous. Many Walrus pilots have added personal recollections to the narrative and so too have some of those airmen who were rescued. As well as RAF and SAAF airmen, there were numerous USAAF units involved in the air war over the Mediterranean and Italy, and Norman has been in contact with several Americans whose lives were saved by these gallant men who flew the Walrus amphibian single-engined biplane. Men who knew only too well that to pick up more than two or three airmen generally meant a hard sea-borne taxi ride back to base, which conditions never guaranteed. The stories of these rescues gives one a sense of sincere pride in the men who daily risked their lives to save others from a very hostile environment.

The Everyday Wheat-Free and Gluten-Free Cookbook : Recipes for Coeliacs & Wheat Intolerants Michelle Berriedale-Johnson Grub Street Cookery, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., [N.p.], 1998
Two hundred recipes for anyone who needs to avoid wheat or gluten, from appetizers to main dishes to desserts. If you suffer from gluten allergy or intolerance (Coeliac disease), or wheat intolerance, then you probably know the only treatment for either of these debilitating conditions is a gluten-free and wheat-free diet—this means eliminating bread, biscuits, crackers, cakes, pastry, pasta, breadcrumbs, semolina, and food cooked in batter, as well as many tinned, packaged and processed foods—foods which usually form the greater part of a normal day-to-day diet. Fortunately, there are a lot of delicious alternatives—and this cookbook offers a wide range of recipes including Sweet Potato Soup with Coriander and Ginger; Polenta with Gorgonzola; Terrine of Chicken and Walnuts; Salmon Mousse with Green Peppercorns; and much more. With helpful health information included as well, this is an ideal resource for people with these conditions.

Hornchurch Scramble. Vol. 1 : the defenitive account of the RAF fighter airfield, its pilots, groundcrew and staff Richard C. Smith, Richard Smith, Richard C. Smith Grub Street the Basement, London, England, 2000

When the German raids on London and the South-East arrived from across the Channel in 1915, Sutton's Farm was established as one of the first Home Defence airfields to counter this threat. In the 1930s, now known as RAF Hornchurch, the airfield and personnel were in the forefront of many new aviation technology firsts. But it was in both the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain that Hornchurch achieved its most lasting fame, with its squadrons taking on, and beating, the German fighter escorts to its lethal bombers. After seven years of research, interviewing commanders, pilots and ground crews, Richard Smith has produced their definitive history with many first-hand accounts.

Cakes : regional and traditional Duff, Julie Grub Street Publishing; Grub Street Cookery, London, England, 2003
Julie Duff runs an award-winning cake business, which supplies wonderful rich succulent fruit cakes and other traditional cakes to some of the country's premier shops, such as Fortnum and Mason, St Paul's Cathedral and Selfridges. She has now committed to paper her most treasured collection of recipes, some of them from generations of her own family, in this her first book. She says in her introduction 'my passion for cakes can be wholeheartedly blamed on my grandmother who spent many hours letting me mix fruit cakes at the kitchen table. It was inevitable that one day I would derive pleasure from baking cakes. Having been a chef for many years, my interest in cakes grew - eventually setting up Church Farmhouse Cakes, from our farmhouse in the Vale of Belvoir. We have now grown to become one of the foremost speciality cake makers in the country but the fundamental way in which we make the cakes has never changed, they are still made in small batches using exactly the same methods taught to me as a child.'

British Food : An Extraordinary Thousand Years Of History Spencer, Colin., Colin Spencer Grub Street The Basement, Repr, London [S.l, 2003
"Colin Spencer's acount of Britain's culinary heritage explores what has influenced and changed eating in Britain - from the Black Death, the Enclosures, the Reformation, the Age of Exploration, the Industrial Revolution, and the rise of capitalism to present-day threats posed by globalization, including factory farming, corporate control of food supplies, and the pervasiveness of prepackaged and fast foods. He situates the beginning of the decline in British cuisine in the Victorian age, when various social, historical, and economic factors - an emphasis on appearances, a worship of French cuisine, the rise of Nonconformism, which saw any pleasure as a sin, the alienation from rural life found in burgeoning towns, the rise and affluence of the new bourgeoisie, and much else - created a fear that simple cooking was vulgar. Encouraged by the publication of a key cookbook of the period, Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management, the Victorians also harbored suspicions that raw foods were harmful." "However, twenty-first-century British cooking is experiencing a glorious resurgence, fueled by television gurus and innovative restaurants with firm roots in the British tradition. This new interest in and respect for good food is showing the whole world, as Spencer puts it, "that the old horror stories about British food are no longer true.""--BOOK JACKET.

The conflict between aircraft and U-boat in the Second World War was a desperate one, fought nowhere near as fiercely as over the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic. To the Last Ridge : The World War One Experiences of W H Downing W. H. Downing Grub Street Publishing, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., London, 2002
This soldier's WWI account of trench warfare is "a masterpiece among the chronicles of war" ( The Australian ). Written just after the heat of the battle, this is the personal account of an ordinary soldier's experience of one of the most horrific series of battles ever fought—Fleurbaix, Bapaume, Beaumetz, Lagnicourt, Bullecourt, the Menin Road, Villers-Bretonneux, Péronne, and Mont Saint-Quentin. W.
